Fire Safety for Fall Bonfire Season
9/7/2021 (Permalink)
London residents throwing a bonfire this season?
This time of year the weather is getting cooler, the leaves are crisp and falling, and everyone gets the urge to gather around a backyard fire pit.
Fire pits are fun backyard activities, but they can pose some danger to your London home.
Tips for Fire Pit Season:
- Follow the directions that come with your fire pit (if they are included and store-bought).
- Check the weather first. Make sure there are no heavy winds headed your way before you start the fire.
- Do not use flammable products in or around the fire pit.
- Keep your clothing away from the fire and do not wear any loose clothing.
- Keep pets and children away from the fire at all times.
- Keep a fire extinguisher, a bucket of water, and a safety kit around the fire at all times.
After the fire is safely out, consider where to safely dispose of the ashes from the fire. Remember, have a safety kit and the local fire department's phone number handy in case your fire pit gets out of hand.
Insurance and your Fire Pit
Have you told your insurance company about your fire pit? You never know when the wind will pick up or unfortunate circumstances could cause things to go wrong. Make sure you disclose this information to your insurance company so if the fire pit causes fire damages, you and your home are covered.
