Bleach on Mold? Don't do it!

8/9/2018 (Permalink)

Here is a photo of mold damage that we came upon at a residential job last year. Our certified technicians are trained to clean up mold damage.
Mold clean-up is one of the most calls we get here at SERVPRO® of Pulaski and Laurel Counties and for good reason. Mold can cause illness and other harmful side effects especially in children and the elderly. Many people want to automatically turn to bleach to try and clean up the mold by themselves, because they want it gone and fast. There are many reasons not to try to clean-up mold by yourself. It's always best to call a professional, so you don't spread the mold spores, and cause an even bigger issue in your home or business.

Here are a few reasons that bleach is not a good option for your next mold damage cleanup:

  1. Bleach is toxic.
  2. Bleach loses effectiveness overtime.
  3. Bleach does not kill mold on porous surfaces and can actually contribute to mold growth.

Don't clean up the mold yourselves, call your local SERVPRO® of Pulaski and Laurel Counties. We'll make it "Like it never even happened."

Whether it’s Mold remediation or Golf --SERVPRO is ready!

Marketing Rep Chanel Music getting ready for a day of fun in the sun with the SEK Golf.

Marketing Rep Chanel Music and Marketing Coordinator Kelsey White traveled up the mountain to the South-Eastern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce Golf Scramble last week to represent SERVPRO. They met with many city council members along with business owners throughout the day. The day was fun and hot, but they did have time to talk all things mold. The participants expressed their concern for mold damage in their area. Because they know, when water damage sits for too long, mold begins to take hold. The mold spores rapidly reproduce when moisture is present. For residents that can be dangerous, and for business owners, it can cause legal issues. Mold litigation is becoming a reoccurring case in the legal systems. Commercial property or personal property should be well-taken care of in case of water damage where mold can grow. One of the most common questions we receive is: Do we test for mold? The short answer is, no; however, we do refer industrial hygienists who can test for mold.

Here’s what to do if you find mold:

  • Stay out of affected area.
  • Turn off the HVAC system and fans.
  • Contact SERVPRO® of Pulaski and Laurel Counties for remediation services.

What not to do if you find mold:

  • Don’t touch or disturb the mold.
  • Don’t blow air across any surfaces with visible or suspected mold growth.
  • Don’t attempt to dry the area yourself.
  • Don’t spray bleach or other disinfectants on mold.

Here in the bluegrass state we have weather patterns that can go all over the place. Business owners, homeowners, and city officials must be prepared. When the weather acts up, SERVPRO is ready to act fast!
