water damage on floor with a fan Call us today if you think you have hidden water damage.

Did you know your refrigerator can cause water damage?

Recently, we had a homeowner call and tell us about her refrigerator that had backed up and poured water for several hours. She did get the water cleaned up but the water also leaked into her unfinished basement. Luckily there was no standing water, but she did notice water on her ceiling joists and that the basement floors were a little wet.

She call SERVPRO® of Pulaski and Laurel Counties for help because even though she got most of the water up, she had hardwood flooring. Her flooring was her main concern but water can permeate under flooring and create a mess.

This customer was happy she called us because we could use a moisture meter to test and see if water was holding under her floors. When you have water that does not dry quickly it can create a mold problem under the floors.

We were able to test and let her know she did have water holding underneath her floors so we could set equipment to get it dry.

Water Damage in London Home

A pipe burst behind the wall of the second-floor bathroom in a London home yesterday. The water leaked through to the ceiling of the dining room. The rooms contained tile but had several inches of standing water.

The customers had turned the water off before the water created even more damage in their upstairs and downstairs rooms. A plumber had to come out to make sure they knew what the problem was that caused the water damage. The plumber found a pipe that had burst behind the wall. Our team was able to come out and set equipment after getting the standing water up.

After several days of drying the home was dried out and ready for some ceiling reconstruction. The ceiling had to be replaced because it had pooled inside creating a hole that busted through from the upstairs.

These customers were happy to have one team help with all of it. SERVPRO® of Pulaski and Laurel Counties was there to help.

Water Damage in your London Home From your Bathroom

running bathtub Suspect water damage in your bathroom? Give us a call today!

Bathroom troubles?

There are many sources in your London home that can create water damages or be the source of a leak. Let's look at a few signs in your bathroom that could be the root cause of some of them in your London home.

  • Water Bill

Take a look at your water bill from around the same time in previous months or previous years -- has it skyrocketed or even changed just enough for your pockets to take notice? That could be because of a leak and not that long showers from your family. Keep an eye on it for next month and if you are still seeing the same jump, have a professional take a look. It can never hurt to have another pair of eyes on your water meter. Water bills can run deep and especially if it is winter season and the bill is climbing.

  • Water Stains

This is the top issue that we see when bathrooms are the cause of water damage in your London home. Water stains almost always are a symptom of a more serious issue going on in your home. Once you notice, check the adjoining sides of the walls to see if there are water spots showing up in other rooms.  These kinds of water damages can spread quickly and cause a lot of damage in their wake. Always call someone when you notice water stains so that they can be stopped and cleaned up quickly before they spread.

  • Loose Tiles

When there are loose tiles in your bathtub, that may be signs of more serious water damages. Take a few down and see what is lurking behind the wall.

Suspect water damages or a leak in your home? Call us today at SERVPRO® of Pulaski and Laurel Counties as we can service your London, Somerset, Corbin, or surrounding areas home.  We are here to help with your bathroom water damage.

Be on the lookout for these types of melting ice situations. They could cause your home more damages and severe water damage.

Going on vacation?

When you are going on a trip with family or with friends, you make a list of things to pack or do before you leave. Most of the items on that list have to do with pets, or neighbors, or checklists of what to bring. You pack up your items for a great week, or weeks, away from home. You have a great time with friends or family, and it can all be ruined in a matter of minutes when you return home. When you open that front door and there is water four inches high in your basement or living room:

Did you put your home water supply on that all too important list?

In a lot of cases, we see water damages because folks have forgotten to turn their water off before they take a vacation or extended trip. It is always a good reminder to turn your water heater OFF.

When you turn your water off, you take the pressure off the house. You are much less likely to come to emergency damages, if you have turned your water off.

Keep up to date on electrical wiring and water shut-offs before you leave for an extended vacation. We are always here to help during your emergencies. But, if you follow our tips, there may be less of those for you to have to worry about.

Enjoy that vacation or trip with family and friends, but do not forget the water coursing through the pipes of your home. Put "remember the water" at the top of your next vacay check-list!

Water Damage Equipment: How we can help your home water damage

4/30/2020 (Permalink)

Water Damage Restoration Tools

Water damage restoration involves more than just extracting and drying the wet areas in someone's home. They need to understand the extent of the leak or flooding and the specific requirements of the space. We have specific tools to help identify where and when water damage has taken place.

SERVPRO® of Pulaski and Laurel Counties uses a range of moisture monitoring and evaluation equipment to determine the scale of the problem. Consistent supervision is essential, as drying equipment requires regular checks and adjustments for optimal results. Our technicians must use this equipment to know when and how the water damage has dried.

Moisture Meters
Moisture meters are one of the first pieces of equipment our technicians would use during a water damage. However, they are excellent at detecting hidden leaks and areas of concealed moisture.

To figure out what is causing the surface of the wall to feel cold and wet, the technicians have to take measurements. They may insert the reader a short distance into the plaster or drywall.

Infrared Cameras
In most cases, the source of the moisture is evident. It comes from a cracked pipe, a blocked drain, an overflowing toilet, or some other residential emergency. In cases where it is not clear, infrared cameras are good at detecting tell-tale changes in surface temperature.

Borescopes
The borescope has a lot in common with the pinhole reader, but it is a little more high-tech. However, instead of there being a sensitive component at one end, there is an eyepiece. It gets inserted inside a surface, where a leak is suspected. The area where damage has occurred could be inside a duct, an HVAC system, a plaster wall, or behind a cabinet.

No matter what piece of equipment is used, SERVPRO® of Pulaski and Laurel Counties is here to help with your water damages!

Residents of London, Somerset, Corbin, and other areas: Here's how to prevent ice dams from damaging your home this winter!

11/23/2019 (Permalink)

ice dam snowflakes that are frozen Call our London office today at 606-877-2160 -- if you have more questions about ice dams and how to prevent them in your home.

An ice dam is a problem of house and building maintenance on sloping roofs during cold weather months. Ice dams on roofs tend to occur when accumulated snow on a sloping roof melts and flows down the roof, under the insulating blanket of snow, until it reaches below freezing temperature air. When the melted water reaches the freezing air, ice accumulates, forming a dam, and snow that melts later cannot drain properly through the dam.

The damages that can happen because of an ice dam can be devastating. Ice dams may result in leaks through the roofing material, possibly resulting in damaged ceilings, walls, roof structure and insulation, damage or injury when the ice dam falls off or from attempts to remove ice dams.

The melting of roof snow comes from two reasons: Heat from inadequate roof insulation and heat leaks, and inadequate ventilation. This condition is called a warm roof and the heat conducted through the roof melts snow on those areas of the roof that are above heated living spaces, but the snow does not melt on roof overhangs. Also, a small amount of ice damming can occur from the normal freeze- thaw cycle melts snow on warm or sunny days.

The trick is to keep your roof cold. You want to avoid ice dams occurring to your home or business. To keep your roof cold, follow these three steps:

  1. Stop warm air from reaching your attic and roof. This typically stems from air leaks through your ceiling into your attic.
  2. Go into your attic and check the depth of your attic insulation.
  3. Attic ventilation draws in cold outdoor air and flushes out warmer attic air, cooling the attic and the roof in the process. If you don’t have enough ventilation in your attic this could be causing ice dams and you might want to look into adding come ventilation vents.

It can be hard to make your home "ice dam ready," but SERVPRO® of Pulaski and Laurel Counties is here to help with reconstruction needs to winterize your home.

dehumidifiers on a wet floor Do not let this become your home. Call us today!

A flood occurred in London, Kentucky.

The homeowners were not home for the weekend. The flooding began through an non-insulated window in the garage. The water leaked into the garage and as the rain continued through the weekend the water leaked into the bedrooms in the basement of the home.

The homeowners came home after the weekend to several inches of water in their home.

They had to call SERVPRO® of Pulaski and Laurel Counties immediately. We sent a team out to their home. They sucked up the water that was still standing in some rooms. They began moving contents out of the home and drying them. After that the technicians set up air-movers and dehumidifiers to begin drying the home.

After a week of drying the home was dried out and ready to move contents back into the home. The flooring did not have to be replaced because it was all concrete. The drywall was cut 2 feet up and was ready for the contractors to install drywall. The homeowners were happy to not have standing water anymore in their home.

They said next time they would call us again to help with their water damages.

Do not leave your walls unprotected.

During a water damage, most customers are concerned about flooring and contents that are impacted. While we agree that those are important factors do not forget about your drywall. Drywall is a pivotal part of getting your home water damage free.

Drywall is fairly durable, but a leak can wreak havoc on the inside of your walls. Because of the porosity it can wick up water and become problematic for your home. Areas impacted by water that is not properly mitigated are prone to mold damage which can lead to more serious issues in your home and the mitigation process.

This is why you call SERVPRO® of Pulaski & Laurel Counties. We are trained and certified to look for the water damage you cannot see.

Do not leave yourself at risk and always deal with water damages promptly and efficiently with a professional water damage restoration company.

Water damage can occur at any given moment. It does matter care if you or home, day or night, or if your insurance covers it or not.

What a lot of customers do not realize is that some types of water damage may not be covered under their policy.

Flooding for example is not covered under the majority of structural and content approved insurance policies.

When flooding happens in your home, we want you to know you still have options.

It is important to still get water damage cleaned up when it occurs in your home. We offer financing to help with that. We work with you on your payment plans to get your water damage covered with us.

Call us today for a free estimate at 606-877-2160.

Does my Insurance Policy Cover that?

5/7/2019 (Permalink)

The worst thing that can happen when you have a water damage is getting a surprise about your policy when you call your insurance company.

Most basic homeowner's policies cover some degree of water damage (this does not include natural disasters like floods), however, where that coverage begins and ends depends on your individual policy and carrier.

If you’re concerned about emergency flooding, the first thing you should do is call your agent to determine what sort of coverage you have against water damage. Incidents like backup from the sewer and mold damage sustained after flooding often require additional coverage. Those concerned about substantial or sudden water damage should investigate the extra coverage options they provide.

It's always best to check with your insurance company every year to see what needs updated, what needs taken off, and to remind yourself what is covered when an emergency hits your home.

Water damage occurs when you least expect it (shower overflows, hose gets left on, a pipe bursts), be prepared.

The age-old question, what happens when water damage sits for too long in a home or commercial property?

Basically, the worst.

The First Hour

Water will spread throughout your home ruining paper goods, finishes on white furniture, and sometimes cause permanent staining on flooring.

The First 24 Hours

In the first 24 hours after a water damage has occurred, drywall begins to swell and breakdown, an odor will begin to appear, usually musty or sour. The paint on the wall will begin to blister,  windows/doors begin to warp, metal can begin to rust, and mold can even start to grow on furniture and other surfaces.

Forty-Eight Hours Later

The safety concerns for any one in the house increases drastically. Anyone who has a heightened sense of allergies or mold will become irritated and even sickly. The damage cost goes up by thousands and more property begins to breakdown and become unsalvageable.

Water damage is not a friend to your home. Once water damage occurs, it is important to call for help to get the water cleaned up as quickly and efficiently as possible. Water damage experts are standing by, and at SERVPRO® of Pulaski & Laurel Counties— we are here to help 24/7 and 365!

Classes of Water: How do they add up?

11/27/2018 (Permalink)

In water damage, there are a variety of factors that impact pricing, damage control, insurance, and other aspects. The classes of water can be broken up into four different categories.

Class 1:

This is when there is only a bit of water, absorption, and evaporation.  It means that a portion of a room or area is impacted. It can also refer to a larger area where the wet materials have absorbed moisture minimally. Little or no wet carpet or cushion is present in Class 1 Waters.

Class 2:

This involves a large amount of water, absorption, and evaporation.  We use this classification when the entire room with carpet and pad is affected. There is moisture in structural materials and substructure soil.

Class 3:

This type involves the greatest amount of water, absorption, and evaporation. Water in this class may have come from overhead. Ceilings, walls, insulation, carpet, cushion, and sub-floor in virtually the entire area are saturated.

Class 4:

This kind relates to specialty drying situations, such as wet materials with low permanence or porosity. These types of losses may require longer drying times and specialty drying methods.

If you have water damage, whichever the class may be, call SERVPRO® of Pulaski and Laurel Counties today!

Your Appliances that Cause Water Damage

10/30/2018 (Permalink)

Follow these tips to keep your home from water damage.

No one wants to wake up to water damage in their home. It's never a pleasant experience to see your dishwasher has flooded your kitchen, or your air conditioner has leaked.

Sometimes, you may not even know these appliances could cause such huge water damages. Here are some more household appliances that are a water damage waiting to happen:

  • Hot Water Heater-it's one of the top five sources and a yearly inspection by a professional can take that percentage down.
  • Air conditioner- have a professional install a drain pipe to keep water damage at bay.
  • Washing machine- if there is a leak that is a sure sign for future damage. Replace your hose every five years to help prevent this situation.
  • Refrigerator- the defrost drain can have a leak or clog so it's best to flush the drain with hot water.
  • Dishwasher- adding too much detergent and having a dishwasher over 9 years old can cause it to overflow.

We hope you don't have a water damage, but if you do call SERVPRO® of Pulaski and Laurel Counties today. We are certified and have water restoration trained technicians who are here to help!

Unfortunately, that water spigot has a surprise in store for you.  Many times, these outside sources of water freeze during the winter time without anyone knowing that they are frozen.  Only when someone finally turns on the water for the first time does the damaged pipe become known. SERVPRO® of Pike, Floyd, & Knott Counties handles many of these calls each spring.  Someone comes in from a good day of work in the yard to find a flooded house or flooded basement from that water pipe they just had on.

Let the water damage experts at SERVPRO® of Pike, Floyd, & Knott Counties take care of any of your water damage needs. Enjoy the summer time and call SERVPRO if you need us!

  • Keep life saving devices nearby, like life jackets
  • Enforce rules and regulations for the pool that everyone knows upon entry

It's a fun time for all --let's keep it safe too!

Let's go to the beach --let's go get away!

5/9/2018 (Permalink)

It's that time of year again where swimsuits are being packed and sunscreen is being applied --it's beach season!

We are excited for our customers to get away for the summer and enjoy all the sun and sea salt life has to offer. There are a few things to keep in mind when vacationing at the beach.

Here are a few safety tips from our friends at the American Red Cross:

  • Have young children and inexperienced swimmers wear appropriately approved life jackets
  • Pay close attention to children and the elderly while at the beach
  • Keep a close watch on oceanic life --jellyfish, starfish, and patches of plants (leave these alone)

We hope everyone has a great vacation season, and enjoys the beach! It's always important to have some fun!

Black Vs. Grey Water

5/1/2018 (Permalink)

There are two different types of water that can impact your home during a flood or water damage emergency.

There is a big difference between grey and black water in your home.

Grey Water: can come from contaminants from shower and sink drains, the washer drain, the dishwasher drain, and aquariums. These can all contain containments that are harmful to your health.

Black Water: can come from sewage or flood waters. These can contain harmful bacteria and other harmful life threatening diseases.

While both waters are dangerous in their own ways, any time you have a water damage it is best to get it cleaned by a professional. Call SERVPRO® of Pulaski and Laurel Counties today to make your water damage "Like it never even happened."

Water Damage Reaches More Than Just Your Home

2/23/2018 (Permalink)

According to FEMA, it's important to check your vehicle prior to emergencies!

Here at SERVPRO® of Pulaski and Laurel Counties, we are all too familiar with water damage in homes. But, you should be aware water damage doesn’t just occur in homes, and usually impacts cars and roadways first. We are here to help with some tips from FEMA on how to keep you and your family safe on the road:

  • Keep your gas tank full.
  • Keep your tires up to date so they have good pressure and are less likely to slide on slick roadways.
  • Do NOT drive through a flooded area --even six inches can cause a car to lose control.
  • Should a power line fall on your car, stay inside the vehicle until a trained professional removes the wires.
  • Simply watch the weather and be aware of what is to come when there is a storm and flood warning.

And, as always, when water damage impacts your home --we are #HeretoHelp!
