Is your home prepared for summer storms?

4/26/2022 (Permalink)

summer rain Make sure to check your home during the summer storm season.

Summer storms in London:

Storm Types

The sun has made its appearance, but along with the sunshine comes summer storms. Storms are a natural occurrence but can create a lot of damage to your home. Here are a few summer storms that can create damage in your home:

Lightning- This can create some of the most damage. Lightning strikes can create fires in your home and especially your attic.

Thunderstorms- Thunderstorms probably will not leave any damage, but they are typically a precursor for more serious storms that can cause damage.

Tornadoes- Tornadoes usually leave a huge mess in their wake. They can create damage for miles and miles in several cities and towns across their path.

Home Damage

Here are a few places where storm damage more regularly occurs:

Attic: You do not regularly go into your attic, so after storms, it is vital you check it out. Lightning can create fire damage or small sparks. Water damage can come through and hide behind furniture or other storage items against the walls. Check your attic for damage regularly. It’s important to assess your attic space as often as you check other parts of your home.

Roof: Check your roofing after severe summer weather. You need to make sure there are no leaks or shingles that are missing. These need to be repaired as soon as you can to prevent secondary damage after a storm.

Keep these tips in mind for summer storms to keep your home intact!

Water Damage Backup

water damage on floor with a fan Call us today if you think you have hidden water damage.

Did you know your refrigerator can cause water damage?

Recently, we had a homeowner call and tell us about her refrigerator that had backed up and poured water for several hours. She did get the water cleaned up but the water also leaked into her unfinished basement. Luckily there was no standing water, but she did notice water on her ceiling joists and that the basement floors were a little wet.

She call SERVPRO® of Pulaski and Laurel Counties for help because even though she got most of the water up, she had hardwood flooring. Her flooring was her main concern but water can permeate under flooring and create a mess.

This customer was happy she called us because we could use a moisture meter to test and see if water was holding under her floors. When you have water that does not dry quickly it can create a mold problem under the floors.

We were able to test and let her know she did have water holding underneath her floors so we could set equipment to get it dry.

Do you have a fire escape plan?

4/20/2022 (Permalink)

fire escape plan Fire Escape Plan 101

Have you ever thought about what would happen after a fire in your home? What would you do, what would your family do? Do you have a plan for the elderly, pets, and small children?

If you answered no to any of these questions, you may want to consider a fire escape plan. Not everyone in your family could be ready and prepared to get out during such a dire emergency, so having a plan is the best way to keep them safe.

You want to make sure everyone is included. You want to make sure there is a point person who can alert someone who may not hear or be disabled and not know what a fire alarm is. Also, assign someone to keep an eye out for the pets. The best way to prepare a pet is keep them in one area of the house during the nighttime or when you're away or keep them in a crate. Finding pets at night is hardest part  of making the plan. There is not way to know where they could be unless you have a standing place the entire family knows about.

When planning this escape route for your family there are a few factors to consider:

Have two ways to escape: You never know where a fire could start. You want to make sure there are a few different escape routes so you have a sure way to leave your home, if it is on fire.

Pick a Meeting Spot: Find somewhere far enough away from your home that cannot catch fire from being close to your home, but it is not too far to go in the middle of the night or walk to alone.

Trial your smoke alarms: Make sure to test your smoke alarms quarterly or twice a year to keep them up to date and charged with working batteries.

Trial your escape plan: Have every family member do the escape plan when there is not an emergency a couple times a year so everyone remembers what to do.

Make a plan for if you cannot exit through the two escape routes: Sometimes if a fire spreads quickly it may be hard to a family member to get to an escape place. Make sure they know to keep their bedroom doors closed and to either exit through a window or stay put and lay a towel under the door to keep smoke out until emergency help arrives.

Make a plan for when the fire is out: You want to make sure you have an idea of who to call when the fire has been put out. You may need window boarding, help with secondary damages, contents cleaning, or all of the above.

You local SERVPRO® of Pulaski and Laurel Counties has been cleaning fire damages for over twenty years. Call us for help after you have an emergency. We are here to help!

Wind Damage in London

4/12/2022 (Permalink)

How can you prevent wind damage?

Spring is here and so is storm season. This week alone, our meteorologist has predicted more bad weather for our area in London.

Prevention: Do a checklist of your home before bad weather sets in. Look for downed power lines, trees that have rotted or seem weak, limbs that hang down, or even outdoor equipment/furniture that could be picked up by heavy winds. These pieces could be slung into your home and create damage.

Roof: Get a checkup on your roof. If you cannot, have a professional look for misplaced shingles, or other damages. See if you need a fix or a new roof before bad weather.

Insurance: Have a sit down with your insurance agent. See what needs to be updated to your insurance policy to protect you from wind damage.

Assess Damages: When the heavy winds or storms are over, go a look over your property to make sure nothing is out of place. You want to catch any damages early, so they do not create secondary damages. You also want to make sure they are covered on your policy so you can file a claim or get help for damage cleanup from a professional.

Water Damage in London Home

A pipe burst behind the wall of the second-floor bathroom in a London home yesterday. The water leaked through to the ceiling of the dining room. The rooms contained tile but had several inches of standing water.

The customers had turned the water off before the water created even more damage in their upstairs and downstairs rooms. A plumber had to come out to make sure they knew what the problem was that caused the water damage. The plumber found a pipe that had burst behind the wall. Our team was able to come out and set equipment after getting the standing water up.

After several days of drying the home was dried out and ready for some ceiling reconstruction. The ceiling had to be replaced because it had pooled inside creating a hole that busted through from the upstairs.

Has your business ever needed professional water damage clean-up?

Water damage is something that many business owners and homeowners do not take lightly. Water damage is when moisture and excessive amounts of water have collected in an area. Water damage clean-up is most effective when a professional with the right equipment is called.

Here are a few of our water damage restoration equipment names and uses:

l Air Movers l

The most common type of water damage clean-up equipment, the air mover pushes moisture to evaporate more quickly. Air movers can help dry water-damaged flooring and other surfaces.

l Dehumidifiers l

Dehumidifiers can help maintain humidity in the air to a certain set. This type of equipment helps with water damage that has excessive moisture.

l Air Scrubbers l

When water damage leads to other damages, an air scrubber is necessary for clean-up. Air scrubbers help with smells from mold and airborne contaminants.

l Moisture Meters l

Moisture meters are a restoration technician's best friend. Moisture meters can gauge the water damage severity in a home, and they help with water damages on surfaces.

Water damage clean-up is much most effective with the specialty equipment listed above. Call our offices when your home or business has water damage.

Man's Best Friend

When storm's hit, the first things you think of are your family and home. We hope you include your furry best friend in that group with your family. Dogs, cats, and other animals can have heightened senses during storm season. Some animals even get shaky and ill during a bad thunderstorm. When bad storms hit, like tornadoes and hurricanes, there are a few ways to help keep your pet safe. Here are some tips from the Red Cross on Pet Safety items to pack up before a big storm:

  • Vet Records
  • Leashes and Harnesses
  • Safety Kit
  • Non-perishable dog food

When there are less serious storms, keeping thunder jackets, or a special place away from noise readily available can help. During a storm, having these places available can help an animal's anxiety from the loud sounds.

Pets truly are our family, so follow these tips to keep them safe during storms.

Smoke Damage and How it can impact your London Home

3/13/2022 (Permalink)

fire damage, smoke cleaning Our team is trained and ready to help clean your fire and smoke damage from your home.

Did you know smoke damage can travel through walls, floors, and stick to ceilings?

Smoke damage will not stay in one area. It can permeate all corners of your home.

Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor. Smoke can be tricky, and there are many different types to make cleaning and restoring a true job for professionals.

Different Types of Smoke

There are several different types of smoke: wet, dry, protein, and fuel/oil.

Wet Smoke:

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry smoke:

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises, therefore, smoke rises.

Protein Smoke:

  • cooking mishaps can discolor paint or varnish. Hard to spot, but easy to smell.

Fuel/Oil:

  • Petroleum residue can be sticky and challenging to clean. This type is common in puff back damages in homes without proper releases for the smoke and soot.

SERVPRO® of Pulaski and Laurel Counties is here to help, and we are trained and ready to restore all types of smoke damage in your home.

Is there mold in your commercial property after flooding?

3/8/2022 (Permalink)

Flood Damage in your Commercial Property can cause Mold

There are several times when flooding can get into your commercial property. When water gets in and is not dried properly, mold can gather. Here are a few tips to keep mold from forming in your Henderson commercial building:

Get Rid of Moisture

Before the mold can be addressed to remove, as much moisture as possible needs to be removed. If there is standing water, it can be dangerous to walk into your home or commercial property, so please make sure you can safely enter the building or structure.

Protect Yourself

Standing water, especially category 3 can create dangerous situations.  For example, electrical wiring. You don't want to endure an electrical shock. Once you know you can safely enter, make sure whoever is entering is protected by wearing protective clothing, such as gloves and a face mask or proper PPE.

Hire a Professional

The best thing you can do is leave it to the experts. SERVPRO® of Pulaski and Laurel Counties have been assessing and cleaning mold for over twenty years. Call us to help with your mold damage remediation.

Stay Safe when it comes to Carbon Monoxide

2/25/2022 (Permalink)

carbon monoxide poisoning Carbon Monoxide alarms are helpful in detecting this harmful gas.

We typically teach our customers about fire safety. We stress the importance of keeping batteries and checking the efficiency of your smoke detectors in your home up to date. But, another important detector is carbon monoxide. Carbon Monoxide poisoning can be a lethal killer in your home. We have a few tips to help keep your home safer when it comes to battling carbon monoxide:

  • Have fuel-burning appliances, like oil and gas furnaces, gas or kerosene heaters, fireplaces, and wood stoves inspected by a professional each year.
  • Open the damper for proper ventilation before using a fireplace. Never use your oven or stovetop to heat your home.
  • Make sure all fuel-burning vented equipment is vented to the outside to avoid CO poisoning. Keep the venting for exhaust clear and unblocked.
  • If you need to warm a vehicle, remove it from the garage immediately after starting it. Never run a vehicle or other fueled engine or motor indoors, even if garage doors are open.
  • Make sure vents for the dryer, furnace, stove, and fireplace of debris

There are several things like heaters, generators, dryers, or idle cars that can cause carbon monoxide poising and could result in a trip to the hospital according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC). Following the above tips can help keep your home carbon monoxide-free.

Water Damage in your London Home From your Bathroom

running bathtub Suspect water damage in your bathroom? Give us a call today!

Bathroom troubles?

There are many sources in your London home that can create water damages or be the source of a leak. Let's look at a few signs in your bathroom that could be the root cause of some of them in your London home.

  • Water Bill

Take a look at your water bill from around the same time in previous months or previous years -- has it skyrocketed or even changed just enough for your pockets to take notice? That could be because of a leak and not that long showers from your family. Keep an eye on it for next month and if you are still seeing the same jump, have a professional take a look. It can never hurt to have another pair of eyes on your water meter. Water bills can run deep and especially if it is winter season and the bill is climbing.

  • Water Stains

This is the top issue that we see when bathrooms are the cause of water damage in your London home. Water stains almost always are a symptom of a more serious issue going on in your home. Once you notice, check the adjoining sides of the walls to see if there are water spots showing up in other rooms.  These kinds of water damages can spread quickly and cause a lot of damage in their wake. Always call someone when you notice water stains so that they can be stopped and cleaned up quickly before they spread.

  • Loose Tiles

When there are loose tiles in your bathtub, that may be signs of more serious water damages. Take a few down and see what is lurking behind the wall.

Suspect water damages or a leak in your home? Call us today at SERVPRO® of Pulaski and Laurel Counties as we can service your London, Somerset, Corbin, or surrounding areas home.  We are here to help with your bathroom water damage.

Commercial Fire Damage in London

9/25/2021 (Permalink)

When a fire damage occurred in a London restaurant, we were here to help.

Commercial Fire Damage

This London fire broke out because of a grease trap that caused build-up in the duct system. When the vapors of the fires in industrial kitchens go through the duct systems, the grease tends to cause a build-up. This build-up can cause fires, if not cleaned and taken care of properly.

How does an Emergency Readiness Profile help during an emergency?

This restaurant was prepared and had an Emergency Ready Plan with us so they knew who to call to minimize damage. After the fire was put out and the scene secure, we were on the scene to help. They had the correct contact numbers and how to turn off the water to minimize water damage after the sprinkler system went off.

The owners were thankful they called us at SERVPRO of Pulaski and Laurel Counties. We began cleaning up the smoke and soot damage, next we will begin the reconstruction process.

Here to Help!

We know how to handle fire damage once the smoke clears. Call us today for more information on our Emergency Readiness Profile, so you can be prepared like these customers were in case of an emergency.

Fire Safety for Fall Bonfire Season

9/7/2021 (Permalink)

London residents throwing a bonfire this season?

This time of year the weather is getting cooler, the leaves are crisp and falling, and everyone gets the urge to gather around a backyard fire pit.

Fire pits are fun backyard activities, but they can pose some danger to your London home.

Tips for Fire Pit Season:

  • Follow the directions that come with your fire pit (if they are included and store-bought).
  • Check the weather first. Make sure there are no heavy winds headed your way before you start the fire.
  • Do not use flammable products in or around the fire pit.
  • Keep your clothing away from the fire and do not wear any loose clothing.
  • Keep pets and children away from the fire at all times.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher, a bucket of water, and a safety kit around the fire at all times.

After the fire is safely out, consider where to safely dispose of the ashes from the fire. Remember, have a safety kit and the local fire department's phone number handy in case your fire pit gets out of hand.

Insurance and your Fire Pit

Have you told your insurance company about your fire pit? You never know when the wind will pick up or unfortunate circumstances could cause things to go wrong. Make sure you disclose this information to your insurance company so if the fire pit causes fire damages, you and your home are covered.

Stay safe this fall season and remember, if you have a fire or smoke damage to your London home, call our offices at 606-877-2160.

Microwave Safety for your Corbin Home

8/31/2021 (Permalink)

Microwaves and How to Extend Their Lifetimes

Microwaves are a great, quick, easy way to heat up food; however, they can create unsafe kitchen situations if not properly taken care of overtime.

Here are a few ways to keep your microwave safe:

  • Keep It Clean

The most important thing about a microwave is to keep it clean. Not only will bacteria build-up with splatters of food and grease, but it can make it unsafe. Grease and food debris can be the most common cause of the malfunctioning microwave.

  • Use It Correctly

Be sure to read and follow all directions on any microwavable prepared foods that you heat up. Remember not to heat up plastic that will melt, paper, or anything with tin foil.

  • Check the Parts

Microwaves seem like a simple appliance, but they often contain several parts that need to be replaced or restored as time goes on. One of those is the ventilation filters. When pollutants build up over a six-month period, they need a way to be absorbed. The best way to do that is to get new ventilation filers every 3 to 6 months depending on your microwaves usage.

A microwave that is not at peak performance may begin to fill your home with a smoke smell. When this occurs, you will need someone to restore your home and clean up a smoke (which sometimes is not visible to the untrained eye. Calling a professional to make sure an unkept microwave has not been causing an overage of smoke damage is the best way to create safety and sanitization in your home.

Microwaves are a great modern convenience, but take care of them, so they do not cause a BIG modern problem.

Heavy Rains and your London Home

8/23/2021 (Permalink)

Storm Season

When heavy rains hit during storm season, there are a few steps you can take to tackle these home emergencies:

  • Double-check the insulation in your basement. Excessive amounts of rain in a short period of time can overload basement waterproofing systems, saturating the earth around your basement and then pushing in through foundation cracks. Have an expert inspect your basement to make sure it is properly protected from heavy storm rains.
  • Sometimes, basements that are perfectly protected can still flood, call your insurance provider to double-check your flood insurance.
  • The position of your home can also impact flood damages. Check your landscaping and the slope of your lawn. Professional landscapers can help with this task.

When your London or Corbin home is flooded with storm damage, call SERVPRO® of Pulaski and Laurel Counties today.

Water Damage in your London Business

8/18/2021 (Permalink)

Commercial Emergency Preparedness

When an emergency strikes the best way to combat it is to have a plan ahead of time. The best way to do that when you have your own business is to think of scenarios that could happen and prepare.

We have listed a few ways you can prepare for when disaster strikes at your London business:

Have a plan for evacuation:

When a natural disaster occurs, officials will recommend a rapid evacuation. The best way to make sure you have everyone accounted for and that your business is covered is to have a plan of how to leave it. If you need windows boarded, or roofing double-checked --do all of this before you have to evacuate if you have the time. Or you can do the maintenance before the storm and weather emergency season occurs.

Check your insurance policy:

Make sure you have the right coverage for emergency disasters for your commercial policy. It is always best to have the right policy before a disaster occurs rather than have to add it on after and miss the coverage window.

Store Documents Properly:

Documentation can make all the difference when a disaster strikes in your London business. When water damage hits your commercial London business, it is always better to have pertinent information stored so that you can access them during and after an emergency without them being damaged or hard to reach.

Call our offices today for more information on how we can help you prepare for emergency damages in your London commercial property with our Emergency Readiness Profile.

How to Prepare your Roof in your London Home

8/10/2021 (Permalink)

Storms occur in and out of every month even if it is not a typical storm season. The best way to make sure that you do not end up costing yourself hundreds of thousands of dollars is to prepare your roof as best you can before the storm.

The best way to prevent future damage is to fix the damage that has already occurred from winter, animals, hail, lightning, or other debris. Here are a few signs to look for to make sure you do not have a roof that will be more prone to severe storm damage:

  1. Look for missing shingles
  2. Look for areas that are bending or sagging in places
  3. Look for animal footprints or signs of animals left behind
  4. Look for gaps and other signs of damage left from anything else that has been on your roof that you are aware of, like tv satellites and other equipment.

If you tend to your roof beforehand, your roof will more likely hold up against the storm. It may not prevent all storm damage from occurring in your London home, but it can help minimize future and more obtrusive damages.

Flood Damage and Flood Insurance in your London Home

7/23/2021 (Permalink)

Did you know most people do not have flood insurance on their London Homes?

When floods occur, SERVPRO® of Pulaski and Laurel Counties gets an influx of calls. Water damage infiltrates every and any part of your home when it comes to flood water.

When it comes to insurance and water damage, we know the drill and so do most homeowners; however, when it comes to floodwaters, insurance can have different choices.

Before storm season fires up, it is best to sit down with your insurance agent and ask about flood coverage. If floodwaters come into your home, there can be a risk it is not covered because of the additional coverage it takes for insurance companies to payout. There can be additional policies to ask about and the extra cost.

if you experience flooding in your area or even if there is a small risk, be proactive to find out about your local insurance coverage. It is better to save your London home or business money now by asking about flood coverage if water damage from flooding occurs throughout the year.

5/12/2021 (Permalink)

smoke and fire alarm Remember, go check your fire alarms!

Fire Alarms

The possibility for a fire is always there. It is best to be safe than sorry, and the best way to prepare is by having a fire alarm. There are a few ways to keep fire alarms updated and working in the most efficient way:

Here's what you need to know

  • Install smoke alarms in every single room and outside. Install alarms on every level of the home.
  • Smoke alarms should be interconnected. When one sounds, they all sound.
  • Depending on the square footage, depends on how many alarms you may need.
  • Test your smoke alarms at least once a month. Press the test button to be sure the alarm is working. If the alarm still does not work replace the batteries, and if it still doesn’t work replace it.
  • When a smoke alarm sounds, get outside and stay outside.
  • Create a family plan, so you have a meeting place to make sure everyone is accounted for in the home.
  • Replace all smoke alarms in your home every 10 years, even if it still working.

WHY do you need a smoke alarm?

  • In 2009-2013, smoke alarms sounded in more than half (53%) of the home fires reported to U.S. fire departments.
  • The death rate per 100 reported home fires was more than twice as high in homes that did not have any working smoke alarms compared to the rate in homes with working smoke alarms
  • Dead batteries caused one-quarter (24%) of the smoke alarm failures.
  • (Facts from the Red Cross and local fire departments)

When fire damages occur, the damage can be detrimental but keeping your family safe is the number one priority. Fire alarms help do that from the second a fire occurs in your home.

soot webbs Fire damage can create a variety of problems, call our offices today for more information on how we can help.

Fire Damage "Soot-Webs"

During this commercial fire damage, particles from smoke and soot created what we see as 'spiderwebs.' They looked exactly like a spiderweb that has been spun in the corners of this room. In this room where the fire damage source was, a lot of "soot webs" inhabited several inches of door frames and corners. And, according to ACAC.org, the definition of these soot webs is "electrostatic bonding causes fire particles to pair to ceiling and corner spaces."

That's why after fire damage you may see these types of "soot-webs" in areas beyond where the fire actually started.

When fire damages occur, it is best to trust a professional to clean these areas. Call SERVPRO® of Pulaski and Laurel Counties to clean any smoke or soot damage, and even "soot webs."

Insulation - Here's what you need to know.

4/8/2021 (Permalink)

Storm Damage to my insulation, what do I do?

When storm damage occurs and it creates wet rooms in your home, there are a variety of factors that go into play. It is not just about having wet flooring or wet ceiling -- the walls and more importantly, what is inside those walls should be at top of mind.

Insulation comes in several different forms. From foam to cotton, to cellulose, and more: each type has to be treated in a different way after water damage has damaged it.

When we discover drywall/insulation is wet from water damage we will access what type, then we can tell homeowners if the insulation can be saved or if it needs to be torn out and new re-installed.

Often times it saves money and future damage to replace the insulation, and if it is contaminated insulation --it must come out.

Trust the professionals to handle your water damage, so we can accurately access water damage and the material inside your walls and flooring. We want your family and home safe from contaminants and future damage. Follow our blog for more information on how storm and water damage can impact your home.

Keep your home smoke and soot free this spring!

Picture it-- spring is here and time to grill for you and your family. You are outside and the weather is perfect. You let yourself become distracted for a few moments. Your chimney and items close by ignite from the fire --and flames are whipping at your home. The fire created a bigger damage than you thought with the grass and surrounding area covered in debris and soot.

This is just one picture of what can happen when a fire damage occurs spontaneously at your home. You think think the only damage is to your awning or overhanging structure but the smoke and soot damage can travel much farther. After the fire is out and the damages are all that is left, the real work begins.

This is the best time to call a professional. You will notice soot and smoke cover over anything outside and inside your home that was close by. Smoke and soot can travel faster and farther than you may think. You will notice contents in your home need to be cleaned.

Call the professionals at SERVPRO® of Pulaski and Laurel Counties to help with your fire damages including smoke and soot from minor fire damages.

Commercial Mold Damage: Where is it hiding?

3/9/2021 (Permalink)

Have you wondered about your commercial facility?

...and where is the mold hiding?

There are a variety of commercial facilities that could have mold hiding. The best way to know where mold could be hiding is to have a professional mold testing completed. Our offices can complete mold testings for your facility. Here are a few places that mold can be hiding in plain sight, and what to do when you do find it or suspect it.

Restaurants:

When it comes to restaurants or businesses that incorporate food preparation into their business-- they can typically create a mold thriving setting without even meaning to. Because of the temperatures it takes to keep food stored, or have the HVAC set at a certain temperature to keep customers comfortable, a perfect environment for mold growth can be created. Also, having food debris and other food sources can be a great place for a mold colony to begin to grow and spread.

Apartments, Hotels, and Rental Properties
Mold tends to live, in many cases, where people do as well. This means that landlords and hotel owners are some of the most commonly afflicted business owners and managers when it comes to mold, especially when properties are rented short-term. The best way to combat this is to do mold testing in-between residents and have a  schedule set up so you do not forget.

Industrial Settings

There are a variety of industrial facilities that know exactly how to make the right setting to not induce mold growth, but most do not. Sometimes it is not a top priority to detect mold, while other times factory or industry workers can assume that the mold is a part of the surroundings that come with some factories or industrial settings.
Of course, this varies from industry to industry, but it is always a good idea to educate your employees on when and where to look for mold growth for a possible need for professional cleaning.

Commercial Water Damage

When a water damage occurred in this commercial facility, they had a member of the church who recommended us. In this category 3 water damage, SERVPRO® of Pulaski and Laurel Counties were called to clean up the aftermath. A recent flood damage caused this commercial building to flood. This is a photo of the process in the middle of restoration. The air mover, which is a piece of equipment that dries water damaged structure, is set here towards the floor.

In a category 3 water damage, part of the structure impacted had to be removed before the drying process could take place. Category 3 water damages create contamination that must be removed to make the structure safe to restore.

This building used our reconstruction team too to help with the put back. Since the insulation and so much of the drywall had to be cut out. Our team was there to help!

icicles on side of home Think you have an ice dam? Call us today!

After all this ice and snow, it's time to thaw out.
That is a good thing for the roads, but not for your home.

Have you heard of an Ice Dam?

Be on the lookout for these types of melting ice situations. They could cause your home more damages and severe water damage.

An ice dam is when water gets stuck under ice that is on the edge of your home that may have not melted. The heat in an attic causes the water to go through the wall and ceiling. This causes a lot of damage and makes moisture leak into the home.

We are here, we are prepared, and we have our team standing by and ready to help you and your home or business.

After the results come in--

One of our inspectors sits down with each customer to explain not just the results, but every step we took during the inspection.

Also, we provide an estimate of what steps we take to treat and remove the mold along with how much each task costs. We want to provide the best possible solution for your home or business.

We can help with Mold Damage

10/16/2020 (Permalink)

Mold problems? Let us help!

The most common reasons for mold growth are humidity, water leaks, and condensation.  Condensation generally occurs in the atmosphere when warm air rises, cools, and loses its capacity to hold vapor. As a result, excess water vapor condenses to form cloud droplets. Those droplets can create a mold issue.

When you suspect you have mold damage, it is best to call a professional. Mold damage can create a lot of issues down the road if not taken care of right away.

Mold is known for hiding and usually grows behind the walls and out of sight. Mold likes these spaces because they hold large amounts of humid moist air. To find mold, most of the time you will need to have a professional preform an invasive inspection.

Hire a professional--

You want a professional who knows what to look for and why. When mold is present there are certain measures you have to take to make sure it is properly removed.

Call our offices today!

If you suspect you may have a mold problem call the professionals at SERVPRO® of Pulaski and Laurel Counties today. We offer mold testing so we can help you in the most efficient and effective way possible.

Fire Extinguisher Refresher

fire tips for PASS Follow these tips for fire safety!

Do you have a home fire extinguisher?

There are important steps to take in protecting your family and home from an unexpected fire emergency. One of those ways is to have a fire extinguisher on hand and ready. It's not enough to just have a fire extinguisher, you have to know how to properly use it. Using the the acronym P.A.S.S. is one of the best ways to learn how to accurately use it:

  • PULL the pin
  • AIM the nozzle at the base of the fire
  • SQUEEZE the handle to release the fire extinguishing agent
  • SWEEP the nozzle from side to side until the fire appears to be out

Use these P.A.S.S. tips to safely and effectively use the fire extinguisher in your home.

Don't forget the water!

9/22/2020 (Permalink)

Going on vacation?

When you are going on a trip with family or with friends, you make a list of things to pack or do before you leave. Most of the items on that list have to do with pets, or neighbors, or checklists of what to bring. You pack up your items for a great week, or weeks, away from home. You have a great time with friends or family, and it can all be ruined in a matter of minutes when you return home. When you open that front door and there is water four inches high in your basement or living room:

Did you put your home water supply on that all too important list?

In a lot of cases, we see water damages because folks have forgotten to turn their water off before they take a vacation or extended trip. It is always a good reminder to turn your water heater OFF.

When you turn your water off, you take the pressure off the house. You are much less likely to come to emergency damages, if you have turned your water off.

Keep up to date on electrical wiring and water shut-offs before you leave for an extended vacation. We are always here to help during your emergencies. But, if you follow our tips, there may be less of those for you to have to worry about.

Enjoy that vacation or trip with family and friends, but do not forget the water coursing through the pipes of your home. Put "remember the water" at the top of your next vacay check-list!

  • The best way to be prepared for storm damage is to have an insurance policy that covers storm-related damage. Check with your insurance provider to make sure damage from wind, lightning and falling tree branches. You should make sure you are covered now, before the storm comes through.
  • We want you to keep your family safe, so make sure you are prepared by having a family plan. You should have a designated shelter area that is in the basement or ground level. This area should have no windows and enough room for your entire family to stay in for a few hours until the storm is over. Roof Damage in Corbin

7/24/2020 (Permalink)

A severe thunderstorm in Corbin, Kentucky caused major roof damage for one family.

Their roof had several spots of damage from heavy winds during a recent thunderstorm. Our offices were called because one of the family members remembered seeing an ad that we did roof tarping.

Roof tarping may not seem like much, but when your home has holes in the roof and water spilling in from storm rains --a properly tarped roof can feel like a life saver.

After our teams came in to tarp the room and protect the rest of the home for more storm damage, our team of trained reconstruction technicians came to help finish up with the little amount of water damage that had entered the home before the homeowners could call us.

These homeowners were so thankful for the work SERVPRO® of Pulaski and Laurel Counties had done for them and their home.

London, KY Water Damage in Basement

When water from a flood came into a family's home in London, Kentucky --they knew who to call. This family drives by our London office, and knew we specialized in water damage cleanup.

The finished basement had full carpet and a bathroom that were all flooded. The tiles had to come up, along with the carpet and padding.

Why Dry Ice Blasting?

7/13/2020 (Permalink)

man in white tyvek suit with wand Call us today for more information on your dry ice blasting for a fire damage clean-up.

Why dry ice blasting?

When you have a fire damage, the last problem you want to have is worrying about how it is going to be cleaned.

There is typical fire cleaning, but sometimes fire damages create a thick char and smoke damage that creates a need for a different type of cleaning.

Dry ice blasting is a type of blasting method that uses dry ice pellets (CO2 in solid form) as the blasting material that cleans off the char and smoke debris. The process is environmentally friendly and provides a fast and effective alternative to traditional methods of cleaning.

Dry Ice Blasting has become the preferred method to remove smoke soot, vaporized synthetic resins, and char. Dry ice blasting can reduce or eliminate the musty burnt smell that results from fire and smoke damages in a home.

Typically, the technician puts on PPE before performing this task depending on the severity of the smoke and char. The ice blast can create a dirty environment once it is blasted off the wall or smoke damaged items.

In the photo, you can see our technician blasting smoke damage off a fireplace in a basement of a home in Somerset. The process can take several days or weeks to complete depending on the severity of the damages.

It takes a trained technician to complete this process. We have trained ice blasting technicians to help our customers get their homes back to "Like it never even happened," condition.

If you home is damaged by fire, call our offices today. We have more information on ice blasting available.

Unexpected Place that Cause Fire Damages

5/22/2020 (Permalink)

We all know about the kitchen fires, the cigarette fires, and the electrical fires that cause severe damage in homes. There is another kind of fire that causes over 34% of home fires each year: Dryer Vents. Failure to clean these drying vents are causing more and more fire damage in homes each year.

Dryer vents cause a number of damages in homes. Sometimes we turn the dryer on and go to bed, or leave the home, or sometimes leave for vacation --and our dryers cause fire damages to our homes. When those dryer vents are not properly cleaned out, the particles can sometimes build up and spark a flame.

During holiday weekends, unexpected damages can occur. If you return home and need SERVPRO® of Pulaski and Laurel Counties, call us at 606-877-2160.

Water Damage Equipment: How we can help your home water damage

4/30/2020 (Permalink)

Water Damage Restoration Tools

Water damage restoration involves more than just extracting and drying the wet areas in someone's home. They need to understand the extent of the leak or flooding and the specific requirements of the space. We have specific tools to help identify where and when water damage has taken place.

SERVPRO® of Pulaski and Laurel Counties uses a range of moisture monitoring and evaluation equipment to determine the scale of the problem. Consistent supervision is essential, as drying equipment requires regular checks and adjustments for optimal results. Our technicians must use this equipment to know when and how the water damage has dried.

Moisture Meters
Moisture meters are one of the first pieces of equipment our technicians would use during a water damage. However, they are excellent at detecting hidden leaks and areas of concealed moisture.

To figure out what is causing the surface of the wall to feel cold and wet, the technicians have to take measurements. They may insert the reader a short distance into the plaster or drywall.

Infrared Cameras
In most cases, the source of the moisture is evident. It comes from a cracked pipe, a blocked drain, an overflowing toilet, or some other residential emergency. In cases where it is not clear, infrared cameras are good at detecting tell-tale changes in surface temperature.

Borescopes
The borescope has a lot in common with the pinhole reader, but it is a little more high-tech. However, instead of there being a sensitive component at one end, there is an eyepiece. It gets inserted inside a surface, where a leak is suspected. The area where damage has occurred could be inside a duct, an HVAC system, a plaster wall, or behind a cabinet.

No matter what piece of equipment is used, SERVPRO® of Pulaski and Laurel Counties is here to help with your water damages!

Why is Storm Water dangerous?

3/24/2020 (Permalink)

During storm season, there are a variety of variables to be concerned about for your property. When water damage occurs, it can mean several different things for you, your family, or your business. One thing many customers do not think about are the different categories of water. Category 3 water being the most dangerous.

What is Category 3 Water?

Category 3 water, or black water, is dirty. It can contain:

  • Dangerous microbes, bacteria or fungi
  • Harmful chemicals
  • Sewage
  • Dirt or debris from the ground

During this kind of water emergency, our technicians wear Personal Protective Equipment or PPE. PPE must be worn before entering or handling the flood water.

How Do You Handle Category 3 Water?

Our hero technicians are trained and certified to remove the water, tear out items that cannot be saved and disinfect every affected surface that remains before replacing the floor, walls and ceiling that were removed.

The first step is extraction of the contaminated water. A pump that removes both water and debris will likely be used.  They dry and sanitize everything that the black water touched.  After the water damage is cleaned in a safe and protected way, our construction team can rebuild the items that were discarded during the cleanup/

When your building becomes a victim of flood water, it is important to take every step necessary to ensure the safety of everyone in the building. Keep people away from Category 3 water, and let the experts handle the rest.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Why we have it, and why we use it?

3/19/2020 (Permalink)

Why use PPE?

During seasons of major events, what is brought to forefront of everyones mind is how to keep workers who have to stay on the front lines, safe. The answer: PPE.

The use of PPE is important for a few reasons most notably, the safety of our staff and the safety and sanitation of the property we are working with and the customers we are working for at the time.

We do daily and weekly assurances that our staff is trained in proper use and knowledge of PPE. We make this a main priority because without our technicians, we cannot do our jobs for our customers. This allows them to be safe and focus on the job at end, rather than worry about exposure to possibly toxic materials. When our staff knows they are safe, they can focus on providing a superior service to our customers.

We value our employees and the safety of others on the job sites.

Why PPE, you ask? We could not do our jobs without it.

Quarantine Safety Tips

3/17/2020 (Permalink)

During quarantine, most people are going to be home more often than they usually would be any given week.

They may partake in an increase of activities that might normally be reserved for a weekend. Fires in the home occur more often than one would think. During everyones time at home, we are bringing you some tips to keep your home safe. You may decide to cook more often since people cannot go outside.

  • Always watch your stove and oven --never leave them unattended while on.

This may be a time for you catch up on some much needed laundry time.

  • Make sure to clean out your dryer vents after every other cycle or every cycle depending not the size of the load. If dryer vents get clogged with fuzz, they can overheat and cause a fire.

We have also been dealing with cold to mild temperatures during this home quarantine. Please consider the type of heater you are using to warm your home.

  • Do NOT leave heaters unattended or around furniture or blankets. It's not a good practice to use them in the bathroom, so try to refrain from that as well.

We are here to help during this time, and we offer proactive cleaning services to commercial and residential businesses. Keep safe Kentucky!

3/5/2020 (Permalink)

It's that time of year when we spring forward. We move our clocks forward an hour, and we change the batteries around our home. • Replace smoke alarm batteries every year, or more if needed.

If you follow these tips we hope your home does not come in contact with any of these issues. But, we are here to help! SERVPRO® of Pulaski and Laurel Counties is here to help with smoke and fire damage.

Check out these tips to keep your home free from water damage this winter season:

1. Keep the heat on (use precaution when using space heaters, but they help to prevent pipes from freezing)

Residents of London, Somerset, Corbin, and other areas: Here's how to prevent ice dams from damaging your home this winter!

11/23/2019 (Permalink)

ice dam snowflakes that are frozen Call our London office today at 606-877-2160 -- if you have more questions about ice dams and how to prevent them in your home.

An ice dam is a problem of house and building maintenance on sloping roofs during cold weather months. Ice dams on roofs tend to occur when accumulated snow on a sloping roof melts and flows down the roof, under the insulating blanket of snow, until it reaches below freezing temperature air. When the melted water reaches the freezing air, ice accumulates, forming a dam, and snow that melts later cannot drain properly through the dam.

The damages that can happen because of an ice dam can be devastating. Ice dams may result in leaks through the roofing material, possibly resulting in damaged ceilings, walls, roof structure and insulation, damage or injury when the ice dam falls off or from attempts to remove ice dams.

The melting of roof snow comes from two reasons: Heat from inadequate roof insulation and heat leaks, and inadequate ventilation. This condition is called a warm roof and the heat conducted through the roof melts snow on those areas of the roof that are above heated living spaces, but the snow does not melt on roof overhangs. Also, a small amount of ice damming can occur from the normal freeze- thaw cycle melts snow on warm or sunny days.

The trick is to keep your roof cold. You want to avoid ice dams occurring to your home or business. To keep your roof cold, follow these three steps:

  1. Stop warm air from reaching your attic and roof. This typically stems from air leaks through your ceiling into your attic.
  2. Go into your attic and check the depth of your attic insulation.
  3. Attic ventilation draws in cold outdoor air and flushes out warmer attic air, cooling the attic and the roof in the process. If you don’t have enough ventilation in your attic this could be causing ice dams and you might want to look into adding come ventilation vents.

It can be hard to make your home "ice dam ready," but SERVPRO® of Pulaski and Laurel Counties is here to help with reconstruction needs to winterize your home.

christmas trees and a servpro logo SERVPRO® of Pulaski and Laurel Counties is here to help with all your cleaning, and tree cleaning, needs for your home. Our number is 606-877-2160.

The Holiday Season is here!

It's time to get your Christmas trees out of storage and back into your living room. Most people use artificial tree during the holiday season. When something has been put away in storage for most of the year --it can collect dust, mold, or other particles you do not want in the house with your family.

Here are a few cleaning tips to use this season to make your tree troubles "Like it never even happened:"

Dust

One of the foremost necessities in cleaning an artificial Christmas tree is to remove any dust clinging to its branches and needles. Using a static cling cloth, gently wipe it along the branches.

Shake with Salt

If your tree needs something a bit more intensive, use some salt from your kitchen. This is a method that is effective for small trees or larger trees that come apart into smaller pieces. Add small trees or tree pieces to a large bag with a handful or two of Kosher salt, then vigorously shake. The salt will act as an abrasive cleaner, scrubbing away any dirt from branches.

A Wash Down

For heavy cleaning, a light dusting won't be enough. At the start of decorating season, carefully wipe each branch down with a gentle, wet sponge. This will pick up the dust and dirt that settled between the needles while the tree was in storage.

Deodorization

After your tree is clean, you'll still need to deodorize it from time to time. You can hide a scented air freshener intended in the branches of your tree to give it a seasonal scent. It's also a good idea to spritz the branches with an air freshener to keep the basement or storage scent away.

Professional Services

If you are too busy this holiday season to clean your tree, call a professional. SERVPRO® of Pulaski and Laurel Counties is here to help with all your cleaning, and even tree cleaning, needs for your home.

Basement Flooding After Weekend Rains

10/2/2019 (Permalink)

dehumidifiers on a wet floor Do not let this become your home. Call us today!

A flood occurred in London, Kentucky.

The homeowners were not home for the weekend. The flooding began through an non-insulated window in the garage. The water leaked into the garage and as the rain continued through the weekend the water leaked into the bedrooms in the basement of the home.

The homeowners came home after the weekend to several inches of water in their home.

They had to call SERVPRO® of Pulaski and Laurel Counties immediately. We sent a team out to their home. They sucked up the water that was still standing in some rooms. They began moving contents out of the home and drying them. After that the technicians set up air-movers and dehumidifiers to begin drying the home.

After a week of drying the home was dried out and ready to move contents back into the home. The flooring did not have to be replaced because it was all concrete. The drywall was cut 2 feet up and was ready for the contractors to install drywall. The homeowners were happy to not have standing water anymore in their home.

They said next time they would call us again to help with their water damages.

If you need SERVPRO® of Pulaski and Laurel Counties, anytime 365 and 24/7.

Safety Tips to prevent Fire Damage this Fall

9/30/2019 (Permalink)

house with flames in it and SERVPRO logo Keep your house safe from fire damage this fall.

It's that time of year when summer turns to fall and with that comes fireplaces, heater use, fire damages, and needing a fire safety plan. We want your home and family to be safe this fall. SERVPRO® of Pulaski & Laurel Counties brings you safety tips to prevent fire in your home.

Be aware when burning wood in your fireplace or wood stove.

  • Have your chimney and flue cleaned by a professional. Buildup in your chimney can create a perfect storm for fire damages.
  • Clean your wood-stove and remove any clutter that has accumulated on or near the stove or fireplace. You want to make sure nothing can catch fire.

Test your smoke alarms and COdetectors.

It is that time of year to change your CO2 detectors and smoke/fire alarm batteries. With a heightened chance of fire damage during the fall always keep in mind, when fall hits it is time to change those batteries.

Make a fire safety plan.

One of the best ways to keep your family safe is to have a plan. When a fire occurs make sure your family is equipped with how and where to go in your home. Fires and smoke from the fire spread quickly, especially with children or senior citizens. Designate a meeting location away from the home where everyone knows to go, so it's easy to see who all has been accounted for from the home. Always make sure you have one person to call the fire department if a fire breaks out in your home.

We hope you do not have fire damages, and that you follow these safety tips this fall.

If you need help from fire damage restoration professionals in London, Corbin, Somerset, Pineville, and surrounding areas call SERVPRO® of Pulaski & Laurel Counties at 606-877-2160 today.

The Deodorization Process

When fire damage occur in your home --there are other aspects that can be damaging to your home and contents inside your home.

Soot removal and fire odor control are also two common aspects of any restoration process. A professional company, such as SERVPRO® of Pulaski and Laurel Counties, has decades of experience dealing with smoke and odor damages in your home.

Before tackling fire odor problems, our technicians take steps to make sure the working area is secure, and all soft contents items that are impacted get removed.

After severely charred objects get taken out and discarded, our SERVPRO® of Pulaski and Laurel technicians work towards cleaning off soot residue.  Since smoke can penetrate deeply into substances, unpleasant aromas could still exist after removing the items that have been impacted by smoke odor. When foul smells are still present, we take further steps to deodorize your building materials and contents. The deodorization process includes several different techniques that work in various ways to provide more pleasant aromas.

To start, our SERVPRO® of Pulaski and Laurel Counties team conducts chemical containment to chemically block or restrict particles from circulating into the air. We use a pump sprayer to dispense out these chemicals in areas around the source. We have an ESPORTA machine that washes your soft contents in with a force to remove the smoke odors and fire damages.

We clean out HVAC systems to get the smoke and fire smell out of the smaller parts of the home. We have foggers that can break down these aromas, if they stay present in HVAC systems that do not have traditional metal coils.

Trust your home with a professional when you have fire or smoke damages present.

The next steps after a house fire can help you recover more quickly with your family. Some of the steps you can are below:

1. Get Everyone Out Safely

When a fire occurs the first thing you should do is double check with your family that everyone is okay. This includes taking care of any medical needs, finding a safe place for pets, and informing close friends and family what happened and that everyone is okay. Sometimes you may want to find another place for you and your family to stay or for your pets.

2. Contact Your Insurance Company

It’s important to contact your insurance company as soon as you can. Most fire insurance coverage includes repairs and restoration, although it’s a good idea to know what’s in your policy beforehand. (If you have not had a fire damage, use this time to connect with your insurance company and update your policy where it is needed). Your insurance agent may even recommend a fire damage professional who can take care of the cleanup and restoration of your home. Your agent should also be able to help your with the claim process.

3.  Get in Touch with a Fire Damage Restoration Company

Most of the time your insurance company does cover repairs and restoration for your home. Sometimes this includes soft contents and sometimes it does not. Soft contents can include:couches, stuffed animals, clothes, shoes, and hats. Make sure smoke damage is a part of the policy as well as that it usually what impacts your soft contents. You should double check with your insurance company on if your policy covers soft contents. Contacting a professional for cleanup may be your best option. These professionals are well versed in every step of the restoration process, and can take care of any cleaning, sanitation and restoration that may be needed.

Also, knowing who your agent is and what office they work at is the first step in knowing an effective plan when you have a house fire.
The right fire restoration team can take care of your damage and repair needs allowing you to focus on your family. Many insurance companies have fire damage restoration professionals they recommend, and your agent should be able to walk you through the steps of your claim.

Ways to Beat the Heat this Summer

5/31/2019 (Permalink)

This summer has already started out with a bang! With temperatures rising, know the tips now on how to beat the heat.

When being outside all day consider these tips:

  1. Keep several water bottles handy and in coolers to keep them nice and cold!
  2. Try to wear and reapply sunscreen *and bring a hat* to keep the sun rays at bay.
  3. Take breaks! We cannot stress this one enough.
  4. Try not to dress heavily or wear dark clothing that can attract the sun.
  5. Eat! Bring snacks and break for lunch when the time comes.
  6. Always know when enough is enough, once temperatures reach a certain point, know that going inside is truly the best option.

Keeping these tips in mind when going into the sun can help make more pleasant days in the rays.

Pulaski and Laurel Counties: Fire Damage Safety

5/22/2019 (Permalink)

Is your bedroom fire proof?

We are guessing the answer is no to that question. Majority of home fires are due to smoking in the bedroom. Think about it-- tons of bed linens, pillows, and clothes -- it's a fire hazard waiting to happen.

The best way you can protect your home against fires (unless you are willing to fireproof your entire house) is to keep anything that can catch other things on fire out of the bedroom.

Yes, that includes candles.

Anything with an open flame can catch onto linen so quickly that your entire bedroom can be up in flames before you even realize it is happening.

Keep open flames and tobacco products that can be ignited out of the bedroom too. It' the best way to keep your bedroom "fire-proof." We know other things can happen for fires to occur, but why not take out any hazards that are in your control?

We want to keep you and your family safe -- follow these tips London, Somerset, Corbin, and Hyden to keep your home away from the flames.

Does my Insurance Policy Cover that?

5/7/2019 (Permalink)

The worst thing that can happen when you have a water damage is getting a surprise about your policy when you call your insurance company.

Most basic homeowner's policies cover some degree of water damage (this does not include natural disasters like floods), however, where that coverage begins and ends depends on your individual policy and carrier.

If you’re concerned about emergency flooding, the first thing you should do is call your agent to determine what sort of coverage you have against water damage. Incidents like backup from the sewer and mold damage sustained after flooding often require additional coverage. Those concerned about substantial or sudden water damage should investigate the extra coverage options they provide.

It's always best to check with your insurance company every year to see what needs updated, what needs taken off, and to remind yourself what is covered when an emergency hits your home.

Structural Drying

5/1/2019 (Permalink)

We continue with:

5/1/2019 (Permalink)

We use our team to have rapid mobilization, pre-emptive action plans, and local management and pricing for customers.

We use our local offices to call customers and our production team is usually already headed towards the city that needs our help. Once our team arrives they begin getting to work to help customers.

We may be in other areas, but we are still here to help any and all of the green team customers.

What Happens when Water sits for too long?

4/30/2019 (Permalink)

Water damage occurs when you least expect it (shower overflows, hose gets left on, a pipe bursts), be prepared.

The age-old question, what happens when water damage sits for too long in a home or commercial property?

Basically, the worst.

The First Hour

Water will spread throughout your home ruining paper goods, finishes on white furniture, and sometimes cause permanent staining on flooring.

The First 24 Hours

In the first 24 hours after a water damage has occurred, drywall begins to swell and breakdown, an odor will begin to appear, usually musty or sour. The paint on the wall will begin to blister,  windows/doors begin to warp, metal can begin to rust, and mold can even start to grow on furniture and other surfaces.

Forty-Eight Hours Later

The safety concerns for any one in the house increases drastically. Anyone who has a heightened sense of allergies or mold will become irritated and even sickly. The damage cost goes up by thousands and more property begins to breakdown and become unsalvageable.

Water damage is not a friend to your home. Once water damage occurs, it is important to call for help to get the water cleaned up as quickly and efficiently as possible. Water damage experts are standing by, and at SERVPRO® of Pulaski & Laurel Counties— we are here to help 24/7 and 365!

High Wind Storm Damage

4/29/2019 (Permalink)

Damage Causing Winds

Many think that rain and flood waters are the primary cause of storm damage, but wind actually factors into more storm damage than you think. We have seen more storm damage from winds than flood waters in recent years.

High winds or damaging winds are often called "straight-line" winds. These winds can exceed anywhere from 50-60 miles per hour, causing dangerous situations for homeowners. Tornado causing winds are just as dangerous because they can reach up to 100 miles per hour producing a storm path for miles.

Keeping Your Home Safe

It is always good to double check your insurance for wind damage. When storm damage hits there can be a variety of problems that occur with some covered by insurance and some not, and it's always best to have your home under the best protection.

How to Prevent Wind Damage

4/29/2019 (Permalink)

There are ways to protect your home against wind damage this summer.

Prevention

Take a look around your home. Do you have any lowered power lines, or trees or limbs that look weak, even check for larger pieces of furniture or home equipment that wind could pick up and damage your home with during a storm.

Roof

At least once a year, look over your roof. Check it for missing shingles and other damages or decay. Maybe it's time for a new roof?

Update Your Insurance

If you know it's going to be a summer full of hail, high winds, and storms --it may be time to update your insurance policy. Double check that all of the damages that could occur to your home are covered under your insurance.

When your home or business is impacted by fire damage, all you can think about is how to make that home or business back to "Like it never even happened."

We have new solutions for you. We are talking about upgrades. We have a reconstruction division that specializes in getting your home or business the newest windows, flooring, and finishes for the best prices.

There's a new type of windows to consider after dealing with a fire, smoke, or soot damage: double- hung windows.

They are easy to clean on both the top and bottom and the sashes will open and tilt inside for even better cleaning. After a fire damage getting the smoke and soot off the windows is one of the first priority. With these new features --it makes it faster and easier to clean.

Another upside to these windows besides being efficient for cleaning is they are energy efficient, and the seals are less likely to break. Most of these types of windows even have a glazing, so it makes it harder to see inside of your home during the day and blocks heat from entering.

Not only do these windows have several new features, but they can be done in just a few short hours, if they stay the same size.

Another feature of our reconstruction division is you do not have to have damages to your home to get in touch with SERVPRO on upgrading your home. We can do upgrades and reconstruction without water or fire damage occurring. Call us today at 606-877-2160.

Ice Dams Turn Into Water Damage

1/21/2019 (Permalink)

These pretty icicles turn into pretty ugly water damage!

During the winter time, there a variety of winter weather conditions that can alter your home or business. One type of damaging winter weather types is an ice dam.

Ice dams are what happen when melted snow freezes at the bottom of your roof and melted water gets trapped by ice. The water damage occurs on your roof and finds it's way into your attic or other parts of your home.

There are ways to prevent ice dams in your home, so that you do not have to call SERVPRO for water damage remediation:

  • make ceilings air tight so no warm air enters the attic,
  • replace old lighting with sealed fixtures,
  • boost ceiling/ roof insulation ,
  • insulate or seal attic access doors, and
  • fix cracks in your chimney flashing.

When removing ice and snow there are some tips to keep in mind. The last thing you want to do is damage your roof during the process of protecting your home. Here's what NOT to do:

1. Steer clear of removing ice with salt, chemicals or chippers.

2. Do NOT install heating cable.

3. Do NOT add roof vents that can compound the problem.

Use these tips in your home or business to successfully avoid water or ice damage. We hope you do not have to deal with ice dams or water damage in your home, but sometimes nature causes damage no matter what we do.

If you do need water damage remediation --please do not hesitate to call us!

Classes of Water: How do they add up?

11/27/2018 (Permalink)

In water damage, there are a variety of factors that impact pricing, damage control, insurance, and other aspects. The classes of water can be broken up into four different categories.

Class 1:

This is when there is only a bit of water, absorption, and evaporation.  It means that a portion of a room or area is impacted. It can also refer to a larger area where the wet materials have absorbed moisture minimally. Little or no wet carpet or cushion is present in Class 1 Waters.

Class 2:

This involves a large amount of water, absorption, and evaporation.  We use this classification when the entire room with carpet and pad is affected. There is moisture in structural materials and substructure soil.

Class 3:

This type involves the greatest amount of water, absorption, and evaporation. Water in this class may have come from overhead. Ceilings, walls, insulation, carpet, cushion, and sub-floor in virtually the entire area are saturated.

Class 4:

This kind relates to specialty drying situations, such as wet materials with low permanence or porosity. These types of losses may require longer drying times and specialty drying methods.

If you have water damage, whichever the class may be, call SERVPRO® of Pulaski and Laurel Counties today!

Follow these tips to keep your home from water damage.

No one wants to wake up to water damage in their home. It's never a pleasant experience to see your dishwasher has flooded your kitchen, or your air conditioner has leaked.

Sometimes, you may not even know these appliances could cause such huge water damages. Here are some more household appliances that are a water damage waiting to happen:

  • Hot Water Heater-it's one of the top five sources and a yearly inspection by a professional can take that percentage down.
  • Air conditioner- have a professional install a drain pipe to keep water damage at bay.
  • Washing machine- if there is a leak that is a sure sign for future damage. Replace your hose every five years to help prevent this situation.
  • Refrigerator- the defrost drain can have a leak or clog so it's best to flush the drain with hot water.

Fire Safety Awareness for October

10/8/2018 (Permalink)

It's that time of year again where holidays are getting closer, you're cooking more, and fireplaces are being used more than ever. The month of October is all about Fire Safety. Take a look at these tips for staying safe:

  1. LOOK for places fire could start. Take a good look around your home. Identify potential fire hazards and take care of them.
  2. LISTEN for the sound of the smoke alarm. You could only have minutes to escape safely once the smoke alarm sounds. Go to your outside meeting place, which should be a safe distance from the home and where everyone should know to meet.
  3. LEARN two ways out of every room and make sure all doors and windows leading outside open easily and are free of clutter.

We want you and your family to stay safe! Teach your family these tips to be aware for this upcoming season.

Have you gotten your ducts cleaned recently?

8/28/2018 (Permalink)

Sometimes we only think of HVAC cleanings for our own home. We want to keep our family happy and healthy. So, why not extend the same services to our customers. Dirty ducts can circulate mold, odor, and other contaminants throughout the building. Here are some concrete reasons why cleaning those ducts is the best way to go:

Allergies- We all carry allergies through our lives. Flowers, grass, and other natural things in nature flare up our stuffy noses. Dust is another contaminant that can flare our allergies up which is why cleaning those ducts helps prevent those in our customers, employees, and our own selves.

Pets- We all love our four legged friends, but they shed. And, where does that hair go?                  It can head straight to our air ducts.

Efficiency- During the drastic weather months of cold and hot, we want our ducts to run smoothly and efficiently. Did you know that getting your ducts cleaned can save you money, because like everything else, it works better when it's cleaned out.

We want the best possible service for our customers and calling SERVPRO® of Pulaski and Laurel Counties to clean your ducts is a great place to start!

We went to Iowa in July, and we are still in Pennsylvania working with the most recent flooding right now. We hope to help all we can while we are on site. As always, we hope they don't need us, but if they do our storm team is always on standby ready to head into the next disaster.

Bleach on Mold? Don't do it!

8/9/2018 (Permalink)

Here is a photo of mold damage that we came upon at a residential job last year. Our certified technicians are trained to clean up mold damage.
Mold clean-up is one of the most calls we get here at SERVPRO® of Pulaski and Laurel Counties and for good reason. Mold can cause illness and other harmful side effects especially in children and the elderly. Many people want to automatically turn to bleach to try and clean up the mold by themselves, because they want it gone and fast. There are many reasons not to try to clean-up mold by yourself. It's always best to call a professional, so you don't spread the mold spores, and cause an even bigger issue in your home or business.

Here are a few reasons that bleach is not a good option for your next mold damage cleanup:

  1. Bleach is toxic.
  2. Bleach loses effectiveness overtime.
  3. Bleach does not kill mold on porous surfaces and can actually contribute to mold growth.

Don't clean up the mold yourselves, call your local SERVPRO® of Pulaski and Laurel Counties. We'll make it "Like it never even happened."

Summer Fire Safety Tips to Minimize Fire Damage

6/20/2018 (Permalink)

It's that time of year again that everyone wants to pull out the grill and barbecue every night. We agree, but we also want you and your family to stay safe this summer season. Below are a few tips from FEMA to keep you stay grilling fire free this summer:

  • Propane and charcoal BBQ grills must only be used outdoors.
  • Place the grill a safe distance from lawn games, play areas, and foot traffic. Grills should be positioned at least 10 feet away from siding, deck railing, and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
  • Keep matches, lighters, and starter fluid out of the reach of children in a locked drawer or cabinet.
  • Keep children and pets away from the grill area: declare a three-foot "kid-free zone" around the grill.

Remember these tips and you'll help minimize your chances of a fire damage!

Summer Time can Bring Broken Pipes for Your Home

5/11/2018 (Permalink)

Summer has arrived!

After a long winter of not being able to do yard work, gardening or working on that lawn you are so proud of – it is finally time to turn on that water spigot outside and get to work!

Unfortunately, that water spigot has a surprise in store for you.  Many times, these outside sources of water freeze during the winter time without anyone knowing that they are frozen.  Only when someone finally turns on the water for the first time does the damaged pipe become known. SERVPRO® of Pike, Floyd, & Knott Counties handles many of these calls each spring.  Someone comes in from a good day of work in the yard to find a flooded house or flooded basement from that water pipe they just had on.

Let the water damage experts at SERVPRO® of Pike, Floyd, & Knott Counties take care of any of your water damage needs. Enjoy the summer time and call SERVPRO if you need us!

Home Pool Safety

5/9/2018 (Permalink)

We hope your pool doesn't cause water damage, but if it does --call SERVPRO® of Pulaski and Laurel Counties.

It's summertime (finally!) It's time for sprinklers, swimming pools, cookouts, and catching fireflies as the sun goes down. It's all fun and games, but there's ways for the fun to be ruined. SERVPRO® of Pulaski and Laurel Counties wants you and your family to be safe this season.

Our friends at Red Cross have some safety tips for Home Swimming Pool Safety that we'd like to share with you:

  • Secure your swimming pool with the right barriers between the pool and the outside
  • ALWAYS supervise anyone (children and adults) who don't know how to swim
  • Keep life saving devices nearby, like life jackets
  • Enforce rules and regulations for the pool that everyone knows upon entry

It's a fun time for all --let's keep it safe too!

Let's go to the beach --let's go get away!

5/9/2018 (Permalink)

It's that time of year again where swimsuits are being packed and sunscreen is being applied --it's beach season!

We are excited for our customers to get away for the summer and enjoy all the sun and sea salt life has to offer. There are a few things to keep in mind when vacationing at the beach.

Here are a few safety tips from our friends at the American Red Cross:

  • Have young children and inexperienced swimmers wear appropriately approved life jackets
  • Pay close attention to children and the elderly while at the beach
  • Keep a close watch on oceanic life --jellyfish, starfish, and patches of plants (leave these alone)

We hope everyone has a great vacation season, and enjoys the beach! It's always important to have some fun!

Does Insurance Cover That?

5/9/2018 (Permalink)

As summer season approaches it's always a good idea to review your insurance. Insurance is great --it keeps you calm during your storm. But, your insurance may not cover as much as you think.

Your agents want to help you, try to keep in contact with them on what to do when disaster strikes. It's never a bad idea to review your contract and discuss the ins and out of what is covered. Another good idea, is to check your deductible. How much will you need to pay out of pocket before it reaches the level that your insurance can help you? Also, is there separate coverage and  deductibles for hurricanes, floods, etc.

It's always good to stay prepared, and we hope that disaster doesn't strike but SERVPRO is here to help 24/7 -365!

Golf Scramble season is here --time to talk mold!

5/9/2018 (Permalink)

Our marketing team that came out to participate in the golf scramble at the London Country Club!

It's golf scramble season again and our marketing team loves to get out on the green! We bring games, prizes, and all kinds of information for our customers to hear when they approach us on the hole!

The most recent golf scramble our marketing team attended was one sponsored by the Corbin Rotary Club at the London Country Club.

Our team had a full day telling everyone all SERVPRO® of Pulaski and Laurel Counties has to offer. They had a table set up in the front at the beginning of the day to tell everyone all about SERVPRO's services.

One topic that came to the forefront with a lot of these customers was mold. They knew with the weather warming up that the mold spores would be more active.

Our team let them know that we are here to help with their mold damage and cleanup needs.

Storm Season is Here: Be Ready!

5/4/2018 (Permalink)

It's that time of year again when April turns to May, and storms come out to play.

We all want to keep our homes and families safe during this time. The best way to keep your family safe is through an at home kit. It's all about safety first, and planning information out before the storm hits.

FEMA gives us great tips on how to get started preparing our families and ourselves for storms:

  1. How will I receive emergency alerts and warnings?

  2. What is my shelter plan?

Clothes Dryer Vents Cause More Fire Damages thank you Think

5/1/2018 (Permalink)

We all know about the kitchen fires, the cigarette fires, and the electrical fires that cause severe damage in homes. There is another kind of fire that causes over 34% of home fires each year: Dryer Vents. Failure to clean these drying vents are causing more and more fire damage in homes each year.

According to our friends at FEMA, during the peak months of fall and winter they are even more likely to occur in your home.

The facts do not lie,  FEMA reports: "2,900 home clothes dryer fires are reported each year and cause an estimated 5 deaths, 100 injuries, and $35 million in property loss." That's a staggering statistic.

Keep your home safe during the winter season and year around by keeping those dryer vents nice and clean!

Black Vs. Grey Water

5/1/2018 (Permalink)

There are two different types of water that can impact your home during a flood or water damage emergency.

There is a big difference between grey and black water in your home.

Grey Water: can come from contaminants from shower and sink drains, the washer drain, the dishwasher drain, and aquariums. These can all contain containments that are harmful to your health.

Black Water: can come from sewage or flood waters. These can contain harmful bacteria and other harmful life threatening diseases.

While both waters are dangerous in their own ways, any time you have a water damage it is best to get it cleaned by a professional. Call SERVPRO® of Pulaski and Laurel Counties today to make your water damage "Like it never even happened."

SERVPRO has come full circle –the grocery store effect.

10/3/2017 (Permalink)

A look at our Commercial fire damage at the Kroger in Somerset, Kentucky. We cleaned and removed smoke and soot damaged items and areas.

On a recent trip to Birmingham, our marketing team got to meet with Stan Richardson. Stan spoke of SERVPRO’s first ever commercial job. A grocery store in their previous placement in Alabama had caught fire and needed remediation fast. Stan and the SERVPRO team had never done commercial work before so it was a completely new experience. Stan got a team together, and they cleaned the fire up within ten days of the initial first notice of loss.

Now, fast forward more than twenty years later, and SERVPRO completes some of the biggest commercial jobs in the restoration field. We travel far and wide sometimes for commercial work, but we are most proud when we can help our local communities. SERVPRO® of Pulaski and Laurel Counties partnered with another local SERVPRO and completed a fire job in Somerset, Kentucky recently. And, what are the odds, it was a grocery store. SERVPRO has come a long way from the first commercial job, but the motto has always been the same. Whether it’s Somerset, London, or even Birmingham, Alabama; we are here to make your disasters “Like it never even happened.”

Storm damage –from Kentucky to Texas to Georgia and back again!

10/3/2017 (Permalink)

One of our Crew Chiefs and Marketing Reps in Georgia helping make the storm damage "Like it never even happened."

When you think storm damage, your mind immediately goes to torn roofs, downed power lines, and trees littering across street corners. SERVPRO sees a whole other side. Flooding occurs more often in storm damages than almost any other type of debris. When our teams were in Texas and Georgia they cleaned up category 1, 2, and 3 storm flood waters. Here are the differences between the three types of water damage:

  • Category 1- water that does not pose much of a threat to humans and classified as "Clean Water.” Examples are broken water supply lines, tub or sink overflows or appliance malfunctions that involves water supply lines.
  • Category 2- water that contains a significant amount of chemical, biological or physical contaminants and causes discomfort or sickness when consumed or even exposed to, known as "grey water.” Examples are toilet bowls with urine (no feces), sump pump failures and water discharge from dishwashers or washing machines.
  • Category 3- Known as "black water" and is extremely unsanitary. This category includes water from sewage, seawater, rising water from rivers or streams, ground surface water or standing water

Call SERVPRO today, so we can make your water, flood, or storm damage “Like it never even happened.”

Having the right equipment during a fire can save your home –and your life!

6/22/2017 (Permalink)

Follow P.A.S.S. to make sure your fire extinguisher is working properly to protect your family from fires and fire damage.

Fires and fire damage are common tragedies among homeowners. But, there are ways to lessen the damage. SERVPRO® of Pulaski and Laurel Counties is Here to Help so fires don’t ruin your summer. One is having a proper fire extinguisher --especially, during grilling season. Make sure you follow these rules from our friends at the American Red Cross when it comes to having a good extinguisher:

-Always have more than one working extinguisher in your home.
-Install extinguishers high on the wall and away from any heat sources.
-If an extinguisher doesn’t work on a fire immediately, drop it and get out. Most portable extinguishers empty in 8 seconds.
-Make sure the gauge on your extinguisher is properly charged.
-Once you have the right fire extinguisher, always remember PASS:

P- Pull the pin and hold the extinguisher with the nozzle pointing away from you.

A- Aim low. Point the extinguisher at the base of the fire.
S- Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly

S- Sweep the nozzle from side to side.

We hope these tips keep fires and fire damage from your homes. But, if you have fire damage and need SERVPRO, we are always Here to Help. Call SERVPRO® of Pulaski and Laurel Counties at (606) 877-2160.

Pulaski and Laurel County Residents: Is the “Mold Monster” trying to take over your home or business?

6/16/2017 (Permalink)

Don't let the "Mold Monster" come after your home!

Everyone dreads when they look in their basement, under the kitchen sink, or around wet boxes in the garage and see that yellow, green, black, or orange substance. The sinking feeling hits – “I’ve got a mold problem.” While not all mold is bad, some mold can cause health concerns for many people. Any kind of water flooding in your home or business can cause mold to grow --anything from water leaks to varying humidity. The best way to get ahead of the “Mold Monster” is to take precautions. Here are some different signs that your home or business is being over-run by the “Mold Monster” himself:

  • You can visibly see the mold
  • Musty odor –indicates mold is present
  • Any type of moisture problems that may have caused mold growth
  • Excessive humidity

If you think you have a mold problem, and the “Mold Monster” has taken up residence in your home or business, please call SERVPRO® of Pulaski and Laurel Counties at (606) 877-2160. We are always Here to Help!

It’s not time to change the clocks back, but it is time to change your smoke alarms!

6/16/2017 (Permalink)

It's always that time of the year to check your smoke alarms!

Smoke alarms can improve the safety of your home a significant amount when it comes to fires. A fire can happen at any time, and you will want to make sure you and your family are safe. Here are a few tips from the American Red Cross on how to update your smoke alarms to keep your family and home safe before a fire ignites:

  • Have a smoke alarm on every level of your home and in every bedroom.
  • Keep smoke alarms away from windows, doors, walls, or ducts that can stop your alarms from working properly.
  • Check your smoke alarm monthly.
  • Replace smoke alarm batteries every year, or more if needed.

Keeping your family safe is the main priority to having a properly working smoke alarm; but fires can also cause hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars’ worth of damage every year. There is soot, smoke, and even water damage when it comes to a bad fire. The faster you know there is a fire, the faster you can get it put out. Visit: www.redcross.org to learn more tips on how to keep your home safe in case of a fire.

Whether it’s Mold remediation or Golf --SERVPRO is ready!

5/26/2017 (Permalink)

Marketing Rep Chanel Music getting ready for a day of fun in the sun with the SEK Golf.

Marketing Rep Chanel Music and Marketing Coordinator Kelsey White traveled up the mountain to the South-Eastern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce Golf Scramble last week to represent SERVPRO. They met with many city council members along with business owners throughout the day. The day was fun and hot, but they did have time to talk all things mold. The participants expressed their concern for mold damage in their area. Because they know, when water damage sits for too long, mold begins to take hold. The mold spores rapidly reproduce when moisture is present. For residents that can be dangerous, and for business owners, it can cause legal issues. Mold litigation is becoming a reoccurring case in the legal systems. Commercial property or personal property should be well-taken care of in case of water damage where mold can grow. One of the most common questions we receive is: Do we test for mold? The short answer is, no; however, we do refer industrial hygienists who can test for mold.

Here’s what to do if you find mold:

  • Stay out of affected area.
  • Turn off the HVAC system and fans.
  • Contact SERVPRO® of Pulaski and Laurel Counties for remediation services.

What not to do if you find mold:

  • Don’t touch or disturb the mold.
  • Don’t blow air across any surfaces with visible or suspected mold growth.
  • Don’t attempt to dry the area yourself.
  • Don’t spray bleach or other disinfectants on mold.

Here in the bluegrass state we have weather patterns that can go all over the place. Business owners, homeowners, and city officials must be prepared. When the weather acts up, SERVPRO is ready to act fast!

SERVPRO® of Pulaski and Laurel Counties Mourns Death of Franchise Founder

1/27/2017 (Permalink)

SERVPRO® of Pulaski & Laurel Counties announced Monday that SERVPRO franchise system founder, Ted Isaacson, passed away on Friday, January 20th.  “Ted was the most inspirational person I’ve ever had the pleasure of spending time with,” said Julie Roberts, Co-Owner of the local franchise, “He could fill a room with his presence, and every time I walked away from talking to him I felt like I needed to go make a to-do list of things I needed to get done!”

Ted and his wife Doris founded the company in 1967 in Sacramento, California after some time in the painting and cleaning industry.  His commitment to the system, helping change people’s lives, and his family, skyrocketed the franchise system to where it is today, with over 1700 franchises across the United States and Canada.  SERVPRO has been ranked #1 in the Restoration Services category by Entrepreneur Magazine continually since 2004, as well as a Top 10 member of their “Overall Franchise Opportunities” since 2010.

SERVPRO of Pulaski & Laurel Counties is independently owned and operated by Tony and Julie Roberts and is in London, Kentucky.  The Roberts also own two other SERVPRO franchises located in Berea and Prestonsburg.  Their local offices will be live streaming the funeral on Friday, January 27th at 10:30 AM.  The family is asking in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the Trinity Lutheran Church in Gallatin, TN.

SERVPRO offers property owners no-cost tools for preparing a disaster readiness Plan

London, KY- (Grassroots Newswire) 9-12-16  Each September, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) sponsors an awareness eventNational Preparedness Month (http://www.ready.gov/September)to encourage both home and business owners to review and update their emergency preparedness and business and life continuity plans. Julie Roberts, owner of SERVPRO® of Pulaski & Laurel Counties, encourages London, Somerset, and Corbin property owners to take advantage of the information available from FEMA, because advance planning is critical in dealing with and recovering from the unexpected.

“Most home and business owners have taken basic precautions to protect life and property in the event of an emergency like flooding, fire, wind damage, or even malicious attacks,” said Roberts. “In many cases, building codes require clearly marked emergency exits, fire extinguishers, fire and flood drills, and similar preparations. But the missing link for many property owners is a comprehensive emergency plan that provides first responders with the information they need to deal with the emergency quickly and effectively, like the location of shut-off valves, fire suppression system controls, and emergency contact numbers.”

SERVPRO offers tools for both commercial and residential property owners to help address this problem. Business and home owners alike can download the free SERVPRO READY app, and store time-critical contact and property information electronically, in advance, where it can be accessed with a mobile device in seconds if disaster strikes. In addition, when a business designates their local SERVPRO Franchise Professional as their disaster mitigation and restoration provider, SERVPRO professionals will conduct a no-cost assessment of the facility and assist the owner in completing a comprehensive Emergency READY Profile® (ERP). The ERP includes information about emergency contact numbers, priority and high/risk areas, shut-off valve locations and more that can then be stored in the READY app.

“The most effective response to any emergency is a fast response,” says Roberts, “and that means having critical information available and ready to access at a moment’s notice. FEMA statistics* show that as many as 40 percent of businesses never reopen after a major flood disaster. Minimizing downtime and repairs with a quick, effective response effort can help prevent this type of outcome for businesses and can also help families put their homes and lives back on track in less time and with less stress. Creating a READY profile in advance with SERVPRO’s no-cost tools is well worth the time.”

SERVPRO® of Pulaski & Laurel Counties specializes in disaster restoration, cleanup and repair services, helping to remediate damage, making it “Like it never even happened,” for both commercial and residential customers. • Contact SERVPRO of Pulaski & Laurel Counties for mold remediation services.

What Not to Do:

SERVPRO Franchises Take Away Top Honors at 2016 Convention in Las Vegas

8/11/2016 (Permalink)

Keep up our #ServproSummerOfSelfies social media campaign on a red carpet in Las Vegas.

The SERVPRO ownership team, consisting of Tony and Julie Roberts and Mike Parsons, returned from Las Vegas last month after a week of celebrating the accomplishments of their franchises at the 2016 SERVPRO National Convention.  Held at the MGM Grand, Tony, Julie, and Mike took the very hot week (up to 120 degree temperatures) to learn more about our new Operating Software enhancements, increasing customer service rankings, new advancements in water and fire damage cleaning and equipment, as well innovative sales tactics to keep our insurance clients and property managers thinking of the SERVPRO brand.

Ironically while visiting the typically hot and dry town, terrible rain storms flooded the streets, even causing the airport to delay flights.  “I received a flood warning notification on my phone” said Tony Roberts, “and naturally thought it was for London, Corbin, or Somerset flooding, and it turned out it was for Las Vegas.”  Then while heading to the room, a leak in the ceiling of the casino caused a small water damage in the slot machine area.  “It’s like they knew SERVPRO was in town!”

The Roberts and Parsons celebrated another year of superior performance at the Awards Banquet.  Their franchises again ranked in the top 100 performers, of over 1600 franchises in the United States and Canada.  They also held on to their spot in the Top Storm Team Volume Producers of all time.  “We are extremely blessed with a great team, a passion for the industry, and the opportunity to help people when they need it most,” said Julie, “the fact that we are continually recognized as being the top performers in our system is just icing on the cake.”

SERVPRO Convention in 2017 is being held in Seattle, and Tony, Julie, and Mike said they plan on taking away top honors again next year.  “This year we’ve been afforded the opportunity to help a lot of people with fire, water and mold damage in Southeastern Kentucky and beyond,” said Mike, “we just keep making it a priority to help those people who need it most, and our customers just keep coming back and spreading the word of our quality work.”

SERVPRO Owner Graduates Small Business Development Class in Williamsburg, Kentucky

    4/12/2016 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Pulaski & Laurel Counties Co-Owner, Julie Roberts, earned recognition for continuing education in Small Business Leadership last month, by completing the Southeast Kentucky Economic Development’s Core Four Business Planning Course.  The four week course, held in Williamsburg, Kentucky, focused on strategic planning for small businesses.  With classes in Marketing Plan Development, Cash Flow, Operations Management, and Funding, the course helps local business owners like Roberts not only start new businesses, but develop existing ones.  Roberts, together with her husband, Tony, have owned SERVPRO of Pulaski and Laurel Counties in London, Kentucky, for over 10 years now.  They also own additional locations in the Berea/Richmond area, and the Pikeville/Prestonsburg area.

“After 11 years of doing business operations on a daily basis, sometimes you forget the small planning phases that are what built your business initially,” Roberts said.  “Core Four helped me take my business back apart, re-evaluate the foundation, and set up a solid plan for our future, both short and long term.”

SKED offers many classes for small business owners throughout Eastern and Central Kentucky.  “SKED has afforded us so many opportunities with business ownership I didn’t dream were possible,” said Roberts.  “I encourage anyone interested in getting into small business ownership, or even interested in further developing what you have, to attend one of these classes.”

Spring Cleaning – How clean is your home’s HVAC system?

    4/5/2016 (Permalink)

As a company specializing in cleaning services of all types and sizes, SERVPRO of Pulaski & Laurel Counties finds that one of the most overlooked aspects of a clean home is the HVAC system and vents.  Have you ever thought to yourself…I wonder what is in my vents?  It’s a good question.  If you’ve never had your system cleaned before, then consider these benefits…

From the National Air Duct Cleaners Association:

Indoor Air Quality.  In a typical six room home, up to 40 pounds of dust is generated annually just through every day living!  That’s potentially 40 pounds of dust covering the inside of your system and being recirculated through your home every year.

Respiratory Issues and Allergies.  Think of all of the cleaning products, chemicals, dander, etc. present in your home each day.  Those particles are circulated on average 5-7 times per day.  These contaminants could build up in the duct work.  While this doesn’t necessarily mean your system is unhealthy, the buildup and recirculation of these contaminants could pose serious health problems to those with allergies or respiratory and/or autoimmune disorders.

Energy Savings.  According the U.S. Department of Energy, 25 to 40 percent of the energy used to cool or heat a home is wasted.  Contaminant build up inside the system over time causes the unit to work harder and can ultimately shorten the life of your system.  With a clean system, the unit doesn’t have to work as hard to maintain the desired temperature which leads to less energy being used and greater cost effectiveness.

If you haven’t had your HVAC system cleaned for some time – or ever – consider using the professional services of SERVPRO of Pulaski & Laurel Counties.  Our experienced team can provide you with an affordable quote to have your entire system cleaned and fogged with an EPA registered disinfectant.  Having a clean system is a great way to promote healthy air quality in your home and lower energy costs each month.  Sounds like a great way to kick off your spring cleaning!

Are you “Weather Aware”? Tips for Being Prepared as Storm Season Approaches

    3/29/2016 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Pulaski & Laurel Counties has been involved in emergency storm assistance for many years now and during that time has actively worked with local insurance companies and emergency management teams to assist people in extremely difficult and dangerous situations.  With severe weather season fast approaching our area, it is important to be reminded of some basic safety tips in order to stay prepared and alert during our ever changing weather patterns.

From the Kentucky Division of Emergency Management:

    “When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors!”

    • Before a thunderstorm arrives, know the key warning signs:  dark clouds, lightening, and thunder

    • Get informed with a weather radio or by watching the news

    • Have an emergency kit on hand that includes flashlights, battery operated weather radio, first aid kit, food and water, and essential medicines

    • Stay inside and sheltered.  If outside, move indoors or into a vehicle.  Get out of water immediately.  If trapped outside, make yourself as small as possible in a low lying area

    • Make sure to wait at least 30 minutes after the storm has passed before going outside

In addition, in order to be prepared for a tornado:

    • Have a family tornado plan in place and practice a family tornado drill

    • Watch for weather signs like dark greenish skies, large hail, dark low clouds and load roaring sounds

    • Put as many walls and floors between you and the tornado as possible

    • Flying debris is the greatest danger during a tornado

    • If in a mobile home – GET OUT!  Find a neighbor, underground shelter, or permanent structure for safety

As a trusted leader in emergency response for our area, SERVPRO of Pulaski & Laurel Counties is committed to helping our community be prepared for weather emergencies.  As a 24 hour emergency response partner, SERVPRO is dedicated to providing immediate and professional services to you and your family should the need arise during this severe weather season.

SERVPRO Names to Entrepreneur's Top 10 Franchise List for 7th Consecutive Year

    1/14/2016 (Permalink)

SERVPRO® Named to Entrepreneur’s Top 10 Franchise List

    for 7th Consecutive Year

Cleanup and restoration franchisor retains top ranking in restoration services category and climbs to #4 ranking overall in the 2016 Franchise 500 rankings

London, KY (Grassroots Newswire) 1/14/2016 - SERVPRO®, a cleanup and restoration franchise company, maintains its hold on the top ranking in the Restoration Services industry for the 13th consecutive year and moves up to the number four spot overall in the 2016 Franchise 500 rankings from Entrepreneur magazine.* This is the seventh consecutive year SERVPRO has been included in the magazine’s Top 10 list, standing out in a group of more than 951 franchises that qualified for inclusion in the list.

Entrepreneur magazine’s Franchise 500 selection process** uses "objective, quantifiable measures of a franchise operation" to help would-be entrepreneurs identify franchise investment opportunities. Some of the most important factors considered by Entrepreneur in developing the list each year are "financial strength and stability, growth rate and size of the system."

"It’s exciting to be part of a dynamic organization that continues to grow and strives to always provide superior support for its franchisees, and by extension its customers," said Julie Roberts, owner of SERVPRO of Pulaski & Laurel Counties. "The recognition that the company earns year after year in this prestigious list is confirmation of a commitment to excellence that starts at the top and is evident in the service that each franchisee provides to each and every customer."

According to Roberts, a number of differentiators set SERVPRO apart from the competition and fuel the attractiveness of the company to both existing franchisees and would-be entrepreneurs looking for a strong business opportunity. Key among these are:

? SERVPRO’s strength as a brand with a national footprint, wide-spread market penetration, laser-focused brand messaging, and the ability to create national partnerships with organizations such as the PGA TOUR and the American Red Cross.

? SERVPRO’s commitment to being a learning organization, which keeps training and support at the forefront of the company’s culture and philosophy of success and helps franchisees plan, track, and deliver best-in-class services to consumers.

? SERVPRO’s focus on continued development and support for proprietary software and systems to allow the company’s operational capacity to keep pace with an aggressive growth strategy.

Sue Steen, SERVPRO Industries, Inc., chief executive officer, adds, "One of the potential pitfalls of growing too quickly is outpacing your capacity to train and support the franchisees. SERVPRO® is a conservative company, and early on we took the time to build a strong system and put the building blocks in place to support growth without sacrificing support to our franchisees."

"Today," Steen continues, "as a mature franchise organization with more than 1,700 locations under a single brand, recognition like this makes it clear we are reaping the rewards of having laid a solid foundation and a framework to handle quick growth. As our brand continues to grow, we will continue our winning strategy of supporting and improving upon our infrastructure and investing resources in training and support."

SERVPRO® specializes in fire and water cleanup and restoration services, helping both commercial and residential customers recover from property damage emergencies "Like it never even happened." For more information about SERVPRO® please visit www.SERVPRO.com.

    Franchises named CAPA Mentors

    12/3/2015 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Pulaski & Laurel Counties is honored to announce that we have been named one of 35 franchises recognized as a Commercial Accounts Program Mentor.  As the SERVPRO brand grows, our reputation has changed from a residential fire and water restoration company to a restoration company that is “Ready for Whatever Happens”.

Because of this success, both locally and nationally, the need for standardized systems to help develop and deliver consistency in the commercial marketplace for disaster recovery services exists.  It has been inspiring to be able to help develop these systems, the training, and help utilize innovative software, sales principles, and structured business practices needed to help establish a Commercial Accounts Program nationally.

It is even more rewarding to be able to help assist franchises through this mentorship program who are newer to commercial disaster recovery, and may need help.  We have committed to help any SERVPRO franchise who selects us as a Commercial Accounts Program Mentor with any assistance needed on a commercial loss, regardless of size.  From managing and producing these losses to scoping, sales, estimation, or resource management, our local team is “Ready for Whatever happens”.  Our team believes in the unilateral vision from our corporate office that these losses need to be structured and systematic, and consistent from coast to coast.

We are committed to using our knowledge, gained right here in Central and Eastern Kentucky, to help those who have clients in need.  We want to take the time to thank each of our clients, both residential and commercial alike, for all of the support given to us over the years.  Without you, our passion of serving those int heir time of need could not happen, and we are eternally grateful.

Home Fire Danger Peaks During Holiday Season

    11/23/2015 (Permalink)

As the holiday season approaches and families gear up for decorating their homes and hosting large gatherings of friends and family, Anthony Roberts of SERVPRO of Pulaski & Laurel Counties reminds homeowners to take note of some sobering statistics about home fire safety from the National Fire Prevention Association:

  • Cooking equipment is the leading cause of home structure fires. The three peak days for home cooking fires are Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and Christmas Eve.1
  • Candles fires peak in December. The top three days for candles fires are Christmas Day, Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.2
  • “These statistics are a serious reminder of how the excitement of holiday entertaining can quickly turn into a life-altering fire or even a tragic injury or death,” says Roberts. “While glowing candles and elaborate meals set the stage for a great holiday get-together, homeowners need to exercise extra care in controlling the dangerous potential for fires.”

According to the NFPA3, unattended cooking is by far the leading cause of home cooking fires, with frying posing the greatest fire risk and electric ranges posing a higher risk than gas ranges. Range top cooking in general started the majority of home cooking fires and caused 86 percent of related civilian deaths for the reporting period.

While incidents of candle fires peaked in 2001 and have been falling since, candles are still one of the top 10 causes of U.S. home fires, according to the NFPA. As with cooking fires, unattended or abandoned candles account for a large portion of candle fires–almost 20 percent–but the most frequent cause of candle fires is placing the candle too close to something that can burn, like curtains, decorations or furniture.

“It’s easy to see why cooking and candle fires both peak during the holiday season,” says Roberts, “and it’s also easy to see why homeowners need to take extra care when decorating their homes or entertaining. A moment’s inattention at the stove or a guest repositioning a candle on a tabletop may be all it takes to turn the festivities into a fight to save property and lives. While our business is fire and water damage restoration and we stand ready to help at a moment’s notice if disaster does strike, our sincere hope is that our friends and neighbors will enjoy a fire-free and festive holiday season.”
